Tbh this is probably the most mid SMT game I’ve played. Strikes me as Atlus trying to repeat the success of Persona with a different SMT spinoff-of-a-spinoff, but sorta bungling it. For all the upsides to it, there’s also a sense that a lot of polish is missing. Too many repeated animations and poses, the exact same combat through the entire game… It just doesn’t stick the landing. The ending- the true ending- hit with a wet thud, leaving me wondering what the point of it all was. It does try interesting new things, but overall, it strikes me as just not having the amount of forethought or effort necessary to make a worthwhile sibling to the Persona franchise. As a standalone game it’s just okay, without much special going for it.

I spent around 25 hours in the original, then bought the remaster sometime last year and started over. It’s stunningly unique, dense, and philosophical. While the Persona games can be hard-ish, this game- even the remaster- can feel MEAN. The switch version became essential to me beating it- both because of the lower normal difficulty and the portability, although to match my my PS2 copy requires DLC. It’s hard not to love it, all told.

Definitely trades focus on story in previous entries for focus on gameplay, but I still loved the story and all the esoteric grandiosity of it. The whole thing was a joy to play, it looked beautiful, the soundtrack was great, the combat is snappy (every combat animation can be skipped… Except one? 🤔) and I can’t wait to play Vengeance when it comes out.

For me this is one of those all-timer DLC campaigns, up there with The Old Hunters and The Ringed City. It adds seamlessly to the original game, it comes with four separate endings *of its own* as well as an additional new ending to the main game, complete with (imo) a heartbreaking but poignant epilogue. On particular branching path will lead you to one of two ~drastically~ different endgames, that are hardly even the same genre of game. Perhaps most impressive of all, up until the moment I installed the game I assumed I would have to start a new game because my original playthrough had been on Xbox One, and this one was on PS5, but you can set up a CD Projekt Red account and transfer the saves painlessly between platforms. Still wish there was a NG+ because at some point I am going to begin a new campaign, but starting clean isn’t such a bad thing.

The original FF is one that has eluded me- I’ve beaten most main entries, but 1 has always escaped me. The remaster makes it accessible enough, engaging enough, and keeps enough of the original’s quirks to make it easily the best port of the game. I loved it so much I ended up fiddling with every other port I own at the same time. Having seen all the game has to offer, I hope to one day beat more ports of it- most importantly my original copy for NES.

I’ve never played a game like this. If someone asked me what game best represents the early era of SMT, I’d probably point to this one, even if it’s technically a later game. I actually enjoyed it enough that I wasn’t too far in before getting the remake.
This is a great cross-section of the SMT experience for a wide variety of reasons, excluding the lack of an apocalyptic setting. It is fully surrealistic and steeped in broad metaphor. It isn’t ashamed to be preachy or ham-fisted, and I love that for it. It begins fairly forgiving but becomes absolutely punishing, it fully embraces fusion mechanics- you can fuse and register anytime, anywhere (outside of battle). The worlds are memorable, the story is unexpected, the overall look of it became iconic to me- so much so that for a while I preferred it to the remake.
It isn’t perfect- the difficulty may make you want to tear your hair out at times, and the whole alignment system hinges on like ONE event. Bosses regularly spam Rage status and it’s totally unblockable and- perhaps appropriately- infuriating. But whenever I got through whatever block I was grappling with, I often couldn’t put the game down. I was amazed to see people call it a 50 hour game- I willfully put in 140. My hope is to one day emulate it on the wii u. Meanwhile, I’ve already started the remake.

A beautiful game, it was great to finally finish a save I started during the Bush years, but it has some minor quirks that make it less than perfect. Input was weirdly inconsistent and sluggish, and there were other small things here and there that were not an issue in 5 on the same console. Still, it’s a great game and I look forward to playing the DS and PSP remakes.
