One of the ultimate marque blockbusters that made waves in the SNES era. The stunningly detailed graphics full of mood and ambience were immediately striking. There's a strong amount of variety and smart ideas in the journey that gets a little underrated mainly because it came out of Mario's shadow and the genre was oversaturated. This first one is the classic in the SNES trilogy for me because it wasn't truly bettered and featured the most fresh content.

Donkey Kong Country started a new way of playing Donkey Kong.
Taking DK and turning it into a side scrolling Mario game. When i first played this game as a young teen(in my 40s now), i thought wow this is a Mario game but way more difficult. I really could not wrap my mind around it. The graphics were amazing but always felt it was missing something until i got to the mine cart levels(spoiler alert). I thought it was a very smart way for Nintendo to show us that DK is not just a monkey that tosses barrels down a ramp. Okay, you still can toss Barrels but enjoyable all the same.

A timeless classic. Graphic, even with more modern games, still look great with music that lives rent free in my head. The only reason it's not getting a 10/10 is because it's sequel beats it in every way.

Just a really lovely game from start to finish great graphics for the time and still easy on the eye today. While an excellent game it's sequel (DKC2) beats it in almost every way.

A long time ago, Donkey Kong Country raised the bar of platforming/side scroller to a quite high level and it became an inspiration for future games.

Nostalgia plays a big part here. When I was playing in the 90s when it released, I would say it was a 10 out of 10. Today it sits at an 8 for me. It’s still fun and holds up well in graphics. Modern games obviously “feel” better. Some level designs are superb and others frustrating beyond belief. All told, it’s a classic for a reason and having said that, it is still an essential SNES game.

Though arguably eclipsed by its sequel, DKC is an elite SNES platformer that can be beaten without too much trouble. Still, if you want to see all that DKC has to offer, it will take both brains and skill.

Groundbreaking graphics for SNES, one of the top soundtracks of its generation, and less-than-precise platforming make DKC a solid competitor to Mario and the near-monopoly he held as Nintendo's platforming mascot. Humor, charm, and support characters also add a dimension not found in Super Mario World (ok some charm there!).
