NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • To make his biggest score, Han's ready to take even bigger risks. But even he can't do this job solo.

Han Solo should be basking in his moment of glory. After all, the cocky smuggler and captain of the Millennium Falcon just played a key role in the daring raid that destroyed the Death Star and landed the first serious blow to the Empire in its war against the Rebel Alliance. But after losing the reward his heroics earned him, Han’s got nothing to celebrate. Especially since he’s deep in debt to the ruthless crime lord Jabba the Hutt. There's a bounty on Han's head—and if he can’t cough up the credits, he’ll surely pay with his hide. The only thing that can save him is a king's ransom. Or maybe a gangster’s fortune?

That's what a mysterious stranger is offering in exchange for Han’s less-than-legal help with a riskier-than-usual caper. The payoff will be more than enough for Han to settle up with Jabba—and ensure he never has to haggle with the Hutts again.

All he has to do is infiltrate the ultra-fortified stronghold of a Black Sun crime syndicate underboss and crack the galaxy’s most notoriously impregnable safe. It sounds like a job for miracle workers . . . or madmen. So Han assembles a gallery of rogues who are a little of both—including his indispensable sidekick Chewbacca and the cunning Lando Calrissian. If anyone can dodge, deceive, and defeat heavily armed thugs, killer droids, and Imperial agents alike—and pull off the heist of the century—it’s Solo’s scoundrels. But will their crime really pay, or will it cost them the ultimate price?

I reviewed this book last November and gave it one star based upon a single property; the Kindle price was higher than the hard cover price. Shortly thereafter Amazon fixed that problem and as promised in my review I purchased the novel and put it in my queue for reading. Well I am thankful that Amazon fixed that problem because once I started reading this book I found it to be an utter delight! Three of my favorite characters (and who doesn't like Chewie, Han and Lando?) were in the novel along with even a few others that had always had a supporting but small role in novels that took place later in the chronology (such as Winter). The action was non-stop, the plot unguessable with lots of creative twists, and the conclusion utterly pleasing! I won't go into that plot because so many others have done a sufficient job of describing it that I would just be redundant. I will only say that in my fifty years of reading SF I have come to the place where a book really needs to be special to get my attention and win my praise. This book was one of the few that made the grade. I *enjoyed* this book and its hard for me to find similar reading material in this day and age. So if you are a fan of the Star Wars universe, and if you thoroughly enjoy the antics of Han Solo, Chewbacca and any of the other scoundrels from the Star Wars universe, get this book, stock up on the cookies and hot chocolate and settle in for a nice long and enjoyable read in front of the fire, real or imagined. In either case, this book will warm your heart.

If I had any criticism of this book it would be this; the story happens shortly after the destruction of the first Death Star and before Han, Leia and Luke have their remarkable adventures in The Empire Strikes Back. Winter does not know that Leia lives and wonders if Han can tell her anything. It would have made a touching scene for Han and Winter to have that conversation, but they never do. I consider that a missed opportunity by Timothy Zahn.

Nevertheless, after you finish the novel, your pleasure is not over. This gem is jam-packed with extras from the Star Wars universe. So now that the prices are reasonable, take the opportunity to use some of that expendable income that you have earned, pick this up, and be prepared for a really fun ride! It doesn't get any better than this!

*****SPOILERS IN REVIEW******

I give Scoundrels 4 stars. I thought the pacing was excellent and the characterization of those we are familiar with was pretty spot on. Author Timothy Zahn held back enough of the intricacies of the plot to keep the reader feeling in on the action and yet surprised - for example, Dozer and the decoy Falcon, and the Boba Fett twist at the end were real surprises, I thought. I found it disappointing that, besides Chewie (who I didn't feel was used very effectively in this book) and the Falleen, the main cast felt all too human, and I deducted a point for that. Why let a fantasy world be restricted to the limitations of our world - diversity is so delightfully possible in the GFFA. The book slightly made up for it with all the cool women Zahn featured, however. I was also pleased that the author made sure that he left *something* for Lando to be unhappy about when Han and Leia drop in on Cloud City in TESB. It was a nice touch that it was an Imperial entanglement, and I had a chuckle about that. I also lol'd at the Indy references - the rolling sphere and the whip.

All in all, I thought it was a rollicking good read and it felt like a book the author had fun writing. Not galaxy-changing, but entertaining, and I found myself wishing there were more EU books like this one.

OK, it's an obvious comparison to make but this is basically Ocean's Eleven in Star Wars. They even have eleven people pulling the heist. The basic plot is that a victim of Black Sun comes up to Han with an offer. His father was killed and his credit chips stolen. Only he can get the full value for those chips, but if Han can get them back for him he'll split the total with everyone. It's just after the battle of Yavin so Han is desperate for money to pay off Jabba. The only problem is that the chips are stored in the vault of a highly dangerous Black Sun agent and his guest one of Xizor's vigos (his nine top men). You've all seen this before so you know what's going to happen: everything is going to go wrong but our heroes outwit the villains anyway. But it's not about the destination but the ride. And what a ride it is. Zahn's last few Star Wars novels have felt rather bland. It's nice to see him at his best again. He is helped in this because unlike those other novels he doesn't feel the need to drag in every single character he ever created. It's just Han (the man with the plan), Chewie (the muscle), Lando (front man), Winter (odd jobs), Kell (explosives/demolition), and a few new characters: Rachele (local contact), Zerba (costumes), Bink (ghost burglar), Tavia (electronics specialist), Dozer (ship thief), Eanjer (employer). It's quite an odd list but it works well.

The characters are all at different points than we're used to seeing them. Han is still trying to convince himself that his alliance with the Rebellion was just a one off thing. He can quit whenever he wants. Lando is still angry at Han for shafting him repeatedly. Winter is trying to control her anger and emptiness from the recent destruction of Alderaan. She doesn't know if Leia is still alive. Kell (borrowed from Allston's X-Wing novels) is... Kell. He's just younger and still concerned that he'll crack under pressure. I have to say that none of the new characters left that much of an impression on me except for the twin thieves Bink and Tavia. But even there you don't get to know them well. Zahn does take time for character development, but this is a huge ensemble. He can't get too detailed with everyone. I have to say that it's strange seeing the characters like this. Especially Lando, who is in a bit of a dark place where Han is concerned. I almost want to say that he's tortured, but we all know that Lando isn't like that. He leaves all the being tortured for Han.

The villains are pretty good, even if the big bad doesn't show his face often. He's a Falleen called Qazadi and he uses his pheromones much more effectively than Xizor did. It's nice to see the Falleen utilized again. I always thought they had potential. Villachor is the sector chief and owner of the house they'll be robbing. He's a fairly typical villain, but the level of paranoia created by having a vigo present and schemers circling is amusing. The book has its fair share of twists and surprises and things going wrong. These are generally quite gripping. As much as I love the concept it does seem slightly forced that Han would be involved in something like this, no matter how desperate he is. The ending, specifically the way in which he doesn't get to keep his money (because you know he can't or he'd be free of the Rebellion), is also a bit forced with a character reveal that doesn't really make sense. But like I said, it's about the ride not the destination. And this is one fun ride!

5.0 out of 5 stars Zahn and Star Wars novels remain a match made in heaven

Timothy Zahn knows how to write Star Wars. If you've read any of his previous SW novels, you know how spot-on he catches the characters while expanding on the universe brilliantly. And if you've read any of those novels, you need to read this one too.

New characters come together in a science fiction heist that is a new spin on Star Wars. As always, Zahn creates wonderful new characters while keeping some old ones fresh and exciting. A reviewer of Zahn once said it best: you can almost hear the John Williams soundtrack.

This book is a good read. Its not exactly deep, but it is a fun experience. There are some things I really liked and appreciated as a Star Wars fan, like showing the Ord Mantell encounter Han has with the bounty hunter quoted in TESB. And a good few other things, like Winter being a character and really getting inside her head following Alderaan's destruction in ANH. The book also deals with Lando and Han's distrust and falling out they had with each other, and how its repaired. Oh, and theres a twist at the end of the book which I don't think anyone will see coming... I know I didn't.

I'd probably give this book a 7/10.
