Reaper (Final Fantasy XIV)

The Reaper is a melee DPS job in Final Fantasy XIV, introduced in the Final Fantasy XIV: Endwalker expansion. Armed with a scythe as their weapon of choice, Reapers have the ability to channel and host voidsent avatars to aid them in combat. They have no base class and start at level 70.

Profile[]

The Garleans' forebears were once humble farmers who made their home among the sun-drenched fields of southern Ilsabard. That was, until they were driven from this paradise by invaders wielding arcane magicks. Forced north into the frigid mountains, the survivors sought a means to tap into the reservoir of aether otherwise closed to them. A daring few found their answer within the void, binding themselves to its creatures to gain verboten power─power fed by the souls of the slain. Once more they took up their scythes, this time to reap a crimson harvest.

Lodestone

Reapers utilize weaponskills to absorb souls from their enemies to fuel their enhanced weaponskills, which are then used to fuse the Reapers with their voidsent avatar to access the Enshrouded form, allowing access to even more devastating combos. In Endwalker, Zenos Galvus changes his job to Reaper.

The Reapers have an order known as the Lemures in Ul'dah led by Drusilla. Lemures means "spirits of the dead" in the Garlean tongue. They keep their identity as Garleans secret and serve as swords for hire for the people of Ul'dah, as well as hunting voidsent. They also protect Garlean refugees who have grown sick of the Empire's evil and fled to Eorzea, whom they refer to as their family. In the early days of the Empire, they originally served a role not too dissimilar from the Dark Knights of Ishgard as shadow assailants against corrupt individuals with power.

History[]

Before Endwalker[]

The Garleans originally lived as humble farmers on the bountiful region of southern Ilsabard. The region was contested heavily between the Ilsabardian nations and eight hundred years ago, the Garleans were chased from their warm home into the frigid regions of northern Ilsabard. In this harsh region they lived in miserable conditions, forcing the farmers to take their gathering sickle as weapon and allying with voidsents to transcend their inability to use aether. Thus the Reapers were born.

After Garlemald as a nation was established, Reapers began training in the village of Lapis Manalis and served in the army of the Garlean Republic. After Emperor Solus rose to power the Reapers were a special unit that aimed to assassinate the Empire's adversaries, be it from other nations or their own people, before conflict happens. The advent of magitek made Reapers obsolete, and when some were discovered to be insurrectionists against the Emperor, the tradition was outlawed entirely.

Final Fantasy XIV: Endwalker[]

The Warrior of Light met with a member of the Lemures in Ul'dah, where they learned that the Lemures were turncoat Garleans that aimed to live humbly among the Eorzean population. Arriving in the Lemure Headquarters in Steps of Nald, they met Drusilla, the leader of Lemures, who asked the Warrior to help protect their new life in Eorzea by becoming a mercenary and hunting down voidsent. The Warrior agreed and Drusilla gave them the Reaper soul stone.

Drusilla, accompanied by her informant, Arnegis, led the Warrior into Cutter's Cry to train them in the way of Reaper. After the Warrior culled a chimera there, Drusilla was satisfied of their prowess and they returned to the headquarters.

Drusilla called the Warrior back to the headquarters to help hunt a voidsent that had been terrorizing the Black Shroud. The Warrior baited the voidsent in North Shroud, but it was not Drusilla's target and they were forced to return to Ul'dah.

Sometime later, the Lemures were surprised to learn that Arnegis was killed by a voidsent. After informing his widow, Drusilla asked the Warrior to meet her in northern Thanalan where Drusilla explained that her true goal was to slay Orcus, the voidsent who killed her family and had been stalking her ever since. Orcus appeared, and revealed he was Drusilla's grandfather. Seeing the Warrior, he became interested in their soul and threatened to consume them after they were ripe as a Reaper before leaving.

Drusilla then explained that Orcus was formerly Rullus, the best soldier of Reaper unit of Garlemald. As Solus zos Galvus expanded the Empire's territory aggressively, Rullus decided to assassinate the first emperor as he had feared Solus would bring the Empire's downfall. Solus was not human and Rullus was defeated. A broken Rullus wanted more power, and in that moment of weakness, his voidsent avatar consumed and transformed him into Orcus. He slaughtered his own family and Drusilla was the only survivor, albeit at the cost of her own voidsent avatar, which was consumed by Orcus.

The Warrior was asked to inquire the member of Lemures about Orcus's appearance as he had been hunting Drusilla's underlings. After saving a couple from Orcus's voidsents, the Warrior returned to the headquarters where Orcus appeared yet again and kidnapped Drusilla to stoke the Warrior's wrath.

The next day, a letter written with Drusilla's blood arrived in the headquarters. Orcus challenged the Warrior into a duel in the Stone Vigil. Grabbing Drusilla's scythe, they departed. During the duel between the Warrior of Light and Orcus, Orcus empowered himself. While he was gloating, the Warrior threw Drusilla's scythe back to her and they fought Orcus together. He was defeated and Drusilla finally killed him.

Back at Lemures headquarters, Drusilla and the order finally accepted the Warrior as their own family member.

Equipment[]

Reapers wield scythes for weapons. Their armor is primarily made up of "Maiming" gear like Dragoons, while they use "Slaying" accessories like all melee DPS classes.

Their primary attribute is strength, which boosts their physical attack potency, and should always be prioritized over other attributes. As DPS disciplines, they draw the most benefit from the critical hit, direct hit, skill speed, and determination secondary attributes, which all improve their damage-dealing capabilities in some way.

Relic Weapon and Artifact Armor[]

The Demon Slicer Relic Weapon and Harvester's Artifact Armor set could be brought from Grenoldt in The Tempest after finishing the Physical DPS Role Quest, "Courage Born from Fear" and achieving level 80.

The Death Sickle and Reaper's Armor set could be brought from Varsarudh at Old Sharlayan after finishing the Main Scenario Quest "A Bold Decision". They are wearable at level 89.

The Reaper's Manderville Weapon is the Manderville Scythe, which is currently upgradeable to the Amazing Manderville Scythe.

Job Gauge[]

The Reapers use Soul Gauge and Shroud Gauge.

The Soul Gauge indicates the number of Souls the Reaper has accumulated. Souls are accumulated upon executing certain weaponskills and by defeating enemies who fall under the effects of Death's Design from the action Shadow of Death. Souls can be used to execute Blood Stalk, Grim Swathe (acquired at level 55), and Gluttony (acquired at level 76).

The Shroud Gauge indicates the number of Shrouds the Reaper has accumulated. Shrouds are acquired by executing certain weaponskills, and can be used to execute Enshroud (acquired at level 80).

When the Reaper executes Enshroud, they will become the medium for their voidsent avatar. The duration of Enshroud and the stacks of Lemure Shroud are then displayed on the Shroud Gauge. Lemure Shroud stacks can be used to execute several actions, such as Void Reaping and Communio (acquired at level 90).

Upon learning the trait Enhanced Shroud on level 86, Void Shroud will be gained when stacks of Lemure Shroud are used. These can be used to execute several actions, such as Lemure's Slice and Lemure's Scythe.

Etymology[]

[view · edit · purge]The concept of death as a sentient entity has existed in many societies since the beginning of history. In English, Death is often given the name Grim Reaper and, from the 15th century onwards, came to be shown as a skeletal figure carrying a large scythe and clothed in a black cloak with a hood. In Japanese culture, the equivalent of the Grim Reaper is often the Shinigami, literally meaning "Death God".

Specifically, the Reaper's Armor set appears to be based on the Ankoù from Breton and various other Celtic lores, albeit without the signature reverse scythe.

The French and German names for the job—Faucheur and Schnitter, respectively—also trace their origin to their respective stythe-wielding professions and are closely associated with the personification of death.
