Advanced Rules

There are many variations of mahjong, with a wide range of regional and optional rules. Those used for Doman mahjong are detailed below. As many of these rules only apply in very specific circumstances, it is not necessary to remember all of them.

Riichi

Riichi may be declared when a player has a minimum of 1,000 points and is one tile away from a winning hand.
Riichi may be declared while in furiten.
After declaring riichi, it is possible to ignore or discard a tile that would complete a winning hand. However, this will place the player in furiten.
After declaring riichi, a player may only form a concealed kan when it has no effect on their number of waits.

Dora

The on-screen dora indicator shows the tiles that award dora bonuses (unlike some variations where the tiles that receive the bonus are the next in sequence from the tile used as the indicator).

Calls

Novice Mahjong, Advanced Mahjong, and Four-player Mahjong (Kuitan enabled) all use the kuitan rule. The only variation available through the Duty Finder that does not use the kuitan rule is Four-player Mahjong (Kuitan disabled).
Yaku are only determined at the point of calling a winning hand. This is known as the "atozuke" rule, and it is enabled in Doman mahjong.
It is not possible to claim an opponent's tile and then discard an identical tile. It is also not possible to claim an opponent's tile for the purpose of changing a meld to a different meld. These two situations are covered by the "kuikae" rule. Kuikae is not permitted.
It is not possible to call chi, pon, or kan on the last tile.

Yakuman

Only the twelve yakuman below are permitted.
Blessing of Heaven, Blessing of Earth, Big Three Dragons, Four Concealed Pon (includes Four Concealed Pon on Pair Wait), All Honors, All Green, All Terminals, Thirteen Orphans (includes Pure Thirteen Orphans), Big Four Winds, Little Four Winds, Four Kan, Nine Gates (includes Pure Nine Gates)
It is possible to combine yakuman, up to a maximum of four.
The "pao" rule applies to Big Three Dragons and Big Four Winds. It does not apply to Little Four Winds.
- Pao is a penalty paid by a player who allows an opponent to form Big Three Dragons or Big Four Winds. This occurs when a player discards the tile used to form the third triplet in Big Three Dragons or the fourth triplet in Big Four Winds.
When a player is penalized under the pao rule, they must pay the full amount of points to the winner of the hand. If ron is called on another player's discarded tile, these two players must pay half each.

Yaku and Scoring

Nagashi-mangan is allowed. This is a special yaku that is only awarded in the event of a draw and all of your discarded tiles being terminals or honor tiles. If any of your discarded tiles were claimed by an opponent at any point during the hand, you will not be eligible for this yaku.
At the end of the hand, the player that achieved Nagashi-mangan will receive 12,000 points if they are the dealer and 8,000 points if they are non-dealers.
However, this is still not counted as a winning hand in Doman mahjong. Since it still counts as having ended in a draw, the hand will be replayed. If the dealer was in tenpai, the role of dealer and seat winds do not rotate.
Double ron is allowed. This occurs when two players call ron on the same tile. If one of those players is the dealer the round is replayed with the same dealer and seat winds.
Blessing of Heaven and Blessing of Earth are only awarded on the first tile drawn. These yaku will not be awarded if any player calls chi, pon, kan, or forms a concealed kan.
Seven Pairs will not be awarded if two of the pairs are identical. Each of the seven pairs must be unique.
Thirteen Orphans can be affected by furiten while in a 13-sided wait situation. If a tile capable of completing the hand is in your discard pile, you cannot call ron to win the hand.
Thirteen Orphans cannot be completed with a tile used by an opponent to form a concealed kan.
Nine Gates can be formed from any of the three number tile suits.
Winning hands worth 13 han or over are permitted. These are known as "kazoe-yakuman."
All Green can still be achieved even if you do not possess one of each of the varieties of green tile. These are the 2, 3, 4, 6, and 8 of Bamboo and the Green Dragon.

Flow of the Game

Only the East and South rounds are played. There is no "shanyu," which means that a West round is played if a certain score is not reached by the end of the South round.
The round is replayed with the same dealer and seat winds if the dealer calls a winning hand or ends the hand in tenpai. This applies to both the East and South rounds.
If any player's score drops below zero points, the game ends. If a player is at exactly zero points, the game continues.
In the final hand of the game, if the dealer is in first position and produces a winning hand, the game will end automatically, unlike in some variations where the dealer can choose to repeat the hand.
Similarly, the game will end if the dealer is in tenpai and first position at the end of the final hand, with no option to repeat it.
Any abortive draw will result in the hand being repeated. The types of abortive draw used in Doman mahjong are as follows:
- Drew nine terminals or honors on the first turn
- Triple ron
- Four kan called
- Same wind discarded by four players
The "drew nine terminals or honors on the first turn" abortive draw only applies when no player calls chi, pon, or kan or forms a concealed kan.
The "four kans called" abortive draw will not come into effect if all four kans are held by the same player, as that would make them eligible for the Four Kan yaku. In that case, an abortive draw will occur if a fifth kan is formed.
Any riichi points remaining at the end of the game go to the player in first position.
If any players have the same point totals at the end of the game, their finishing positions are determined by their seat in relation to the dealer in the first hand of the East round, with the closer player being placed higher.
If 80 minutes have passed since the start of the match, the next hand will be the last.

Ending the Game

If any player's score drops below zero points, the game ends.
The game will end on the South 4 hand under the following conditions:
- A non-dealer produces a winning hand
- The dealer is in first position and produces a winning hand
- The dealer is in first position and in tenpai
Each game has a time limit of 120 minutes, after which the game will end automatically. Results will not be recorded.
