2 days ago, Behaviour Interactive laid off 95 individuals, citing “unprecedented competition” and wanting to focus on its “historical strengths” as the main reasons. BI is one of Canada’s largest independent game developers and publishers, with an average revenue per employee of $282K (approx) and a consistent revenue growth since 2015. On the surface, the world praises a studio for its games and talks about its big moves. Like that, BI is known for its horror titles (especially Dead by Daylight), partnering with WB for Mortal Kombat 1 and co-creating AAA games like Fallout Shelter with Bethesda. We endlessly glorify studios and their games, but we rarely talk about the individuals who actually make these games a reality. Nobody talks about it when game developers who were truly responsible for a video game’s success lose their jobs. In the end, behind all this visible glory, game developers are the ones actually forced to bear the volatile fluctuations in the gaming industry's economy. We congratulate studios when they make great games, but we fire our game developers as soon as things don’t seem to be working out! Imagine putting years of hard work into building a fine game only to hear one day that you’ve been removed from the effing project. So, here is my attempt to highlight game devs who were impacted by Behaviour Interactive. Repost and tag the right people. Let’s bring them maximum visibility from recruiters and game studios that are currently hiring: Jorge Eduardo Chaparro — As a Sr. Community Manager for BI, Jorge established social media strategies for ‘The Casting of Frank Stone’ and ‘Islands of Insight’. Remarkably, he has also been a senior level Community Manager for Studio Onoma (formerly Square Enix Montreal) and Square Enix.   Marika D. — Marika was also BI’s senior community Manager but for its most renowned hit, Dead by Daylight. She has worked on Capcom and Disney’s DLCs apart from DBD. Before BI, she worked for Ubisoft as a Social Media Content Specialist. Meriem B. — A highly talented Social Media Manager who also supported the launch of Islands on Insight to corporate platforms and multiple chapters for Dead by Daylight. Moreover, she contributed to the growth of Behaviour’s audience by 10%. Vincent Davila — A Game & Level Designer of Behaviour Interactive who worked on four unannounced projects before being laid off with some experience in production, too. Sara Calzada — A killer talent who started her career as a Camera Operator and ultimately became an Art Director & Team Lead for BI. Sara has also been a Designer and Concept Artist for Netflix’s 3D animated series - Kitti Katz. #layoffsupport

Just Cause developer Avalanche Studios Group acquired Monster Closet Games (founded by Ubisoft veterans) in October last year and integrated its developers to launch a new studio in Montreal. Yesterday, this studio was shut down 8 months after launch, along with Avalanche’s New York studio, cutting 50 jobs. In an “exceptionally difficult decision” taken by Avalanche, the shutdown was “necessary to ensure a stable and sustainable future for the company”. Avalanche even expressed regret for losing 9% of its workforce but gave no updates on how it plans to help them after this. For big studios, posting on social media is easier and a one-time thing. But what about the 50 devs who are left with tougher days to come? When AAA giant (Avalanche) entered their lives last year, they promised the devs big game projects. For eight months, they worked hard on a title with Xbox, getting excited about how they would thrill gamers from different corners of the planet. But instead of receiving due credit, they are informed that they are no longer needed on the project and that the company has to lay them off to sustain themselves. If this is sad to learn, consider the sudden mental toll on these developers and the possibility of many falling prey to self-doubt. I also tried finding the impacted folks to give them a shoutout, but I can’t see any #opentowork banners except one or two. There are a few differences in this pulse compared to last months: • A choice has been added to determine whether you are a buyer or seller of services. • The questions are now multiple choice - taking the top answers from last month's survey - with room to add other answers if required. • A bonus question has been added based on a response that gained the most intrigue from April’s survey: what can this community do to more successfully highlight diverse regions for services? Take Two's CEO Strauss Zelnick makes it painfully clear that Take Two is working with Zynga to bring GTA Online to mobile. Not GTA6 exactly but GTAOnline multiplayer. --- VideoGameChronicle: "Take-Two still wants to bring its biggest IP to mobile “WE HAVE TO TRY AND WE WILL TRY,” SAYS CEO STRAUSS ZELNICK" Two years since it completed its takeover of Zynga, Take-Two is still trying to figure out a way to bring its biggest franchises to mobile. “Perhaps most importantly we have the ability together, from both a development and a publishing point of view, to optimise the creation of new titles based on Take-Two’s core intellectual property,” Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick said when the deal was announced. “We believe we have the best collection of console and PC intellectual property in the interactive entertainment business and it’s basically nearly entirely un-exploited from mobile and free-to-play around the world.” At a TD Cowen conference this week, Zelnick was asked whether Take-Two had made any progress towards fulfilling this ambition, or even whether the goal was still part of the company’s multi-year pipeline plan. “You’re kind to ask it that way,” he said. “What you’re really saying is, ‘you haven’t done that, what happened?’ And the answer is, and I said it at the time, I said, ‘listen, that is one opportunity to create revenue synergies, but arguably it’s not the best one because even mobile titles based on traditional core established IP can fail, and the biggest titles in mobile are of course native.’ “Now, what people are really saying, they didn’t say it this way, is, ‘why don’t you just do what Call of Duty Mobile did?’ But the answer is, Call of Duty is a superset, never mind a subset, a superset of one. Basically everything else has paled by comparison in our space.” Call of Duty Mobile was released in November 2019 and had been downloaded over 650 million times as May 2022, according to Activision Blizzard. “That said, I would love to be able to announce a successful mobile title based on legacy Take-Two IP, and I’m pretty sure we’ll be able to do it, but you’re right that it has been backburnered a bit in service of a bunch of other opportunities. Mobile accounted for over half of Take-Two’s full-year revenue and net bookings during the 12 months ended in March 2024. But Zelnick reiterated at this week’s TD Cowen conference that he still wants to make a hit mobile game based on one of the company’s own properties. “Would I like to do exactly what you said? Absolutely. Have we done it yet? We have not done it yet. Is it in our multi-year pipeline? It is in our pipeline, but that doesn’t mean it will succeed, it could fail, in which case it would be irrelevant. No, worse than irrelevant, it would actually cost us money because failures cost us money.” “But we have to try and we will try,” he added. In a statement published on X, CEO Koen Deetman and managing director Paul Deetman said the Netherlands-based studio was forced into the decision after exhausting all possible options for completing planned projects or taking on other work. 🚨 SINGAPORE GAME DEVELOPERS LISTEN UP 🚨   IMDA has launched a Call for Proposal (CFP) for games that are designed to promote and engage audiences with Singaporean narratives and culture. No, they're not asking you to resurrect World of Temasek... Think about Ghostlore, or Chinatown Detective Agency! Games with good taste!   Selected proposals will receive S$50,000 to develop a prototype/vertical slice (ie. a playable with at least 10-minute gameplay) over four-months, to be showcased at a physical event. The selected teams will receive regular feedback from a curated panel comprising the leads of renowned publishers (somehow, I'm on this panel), which will help push the vertical slice towards globally competitive quality standards. If you're a Singapore game development team looking to make something that meaningfully pays homage to the Singaporean cultural identity - but is still a viable, fun game that's relatable for a global audience!! - then please apply! Creating games is very difficult. And building games is challenging. The process of build requires to compile the code and all the data required in the game in a specific sequence involving many dependencies. As such monitoring the outcome is essential, but not sufficent. What if we were able to predict the outcome of a build ? What if we were able to decrease the required computing resources while increasing our iteration capability ? #Ubisoft #Ubisoftlaforge #innovation

Sumo Digital announced a 15% cut in its workforce, roughly impacting 250 individuals. Among these 250 individuals was the team of Timbre Games, which also confirmed that the studio was being shut down. Timbre Games was founded in 2021 and made a part of Pipework Studios. Although Timbre had yet to launch any games, its website indicates that it was in the middle of two game projects. Unfortunately, game developers face more loss than the parent company when something like this happens. Who knows how Timbre's team might be coping after putting in millions of efforts to build the games and losing everything in a single blink? In their support, this is list 2 of some of the Timbreeos who were impacted by the closure. Sophie Mallinson — In 2017, she was Arkane Studios' (Lyon) Narrative Designer who worked on Dishonored: Death of the Outsider and Wolfenstein: Youngblood. By 2019, she had become a Principal Narrative Designer for Arkane's Deathloop. It is quite interesting to note that after Arkane, she went on to work for EA on Star Wars and later for EA's own studio - Maxis Studios on The Sims Series. Nadia Lohan — With over a decade's worth of experience in Production, before Timbre, Nadia was a Producer at Blackbird Interactive and worked on Minecraft Legends. Notably, she has experience in the VFX industry and coordinated for blockbusters like Mulan, Guardians of the Galaxy, and Maleficent. Vivek Ramkumar — Here's a talented Game Designer who has worked on titles like Sleeping Dogs and Tryst, built his own first-person indie game, and has experience in LiveOps Design. Prior to Timbre, he was a senior Technical Designer for Relic Entertainment. Gerritt Turner — Before Timbre, Gerritt worked at Wizards of the Coast on a lot of Magic: The Gathering's writing, designing and overall creative. They even have an experience in Brand Writing for Hasbro. Yuliia Bocharova — Prior to Timbre, she was a Lead 3D Artist for Blackbird Interactive and worked there for 3+ years. More sad news: Paladin Studios's co-founder Derk de Geus announced last night on the studio's LinkedIn page that they are forced to close their studio after failing to land enough work to cover their burn-rate. Paladin has been around for just over 19 years, having developed some amazing games in their time and having worked with the likes of Nintendo, Apple Arcade, Netflix, Zeptolab, Bandai Namco, and many others. Sunday thoughts: I've lost many photos from before 2012, documenting memories from various esports events I've been a part of, but the World Cyber Games 2012 in Kunshan, China, stands out as one of my highlights. Our primary goal back then was to cultivate the esports community by organizing tournaments and events for participants to train and compete across Southeast Asia. We aimed to qualify teams in the region and send representatives to China, championing pride for their countries rather than just pursuing cash prizes. The passion for competing with their favorite games remained the strongest motivation for esports players at the time. It was a simpler era. In today's landscape, the challenge lies in developing business strategies and new monetization models to sustain organizations or companies. Additionally, there's a challenge in educating brands, as many of the organization's approaches are often siloed to specific interests, thus not giving opportunities for brands to create a tailor-fit strategy that is beneficial for them in the long term. Looking ahead, I'm personally committed to infusing our projects with passion, especially when it comes to education. I truly believe in what we're doing, and I'm excited about the possibilities ahead. Another week, another round of layoffs, another studio closure, and another blow to the Vancouver game dev scene. Game development in Vancouver has been on life support for the past few years, and what a shocking fall from grace in comparison to how things looked in the early to mid-2000s where you couldn't throw a BC roll (sushi reference) without hitting a triple-A studio! You can blame more favourable tax credits in other Canadian provinces (which doesn't help!) but that's not the real reason for the decay, is it? We're not really competing against other provinces within our country, we're competing with a global talent market and a shift to remote work that has driven game development to lower cost regions that can produce stuff that's just as good as anything we can make. It's a shock and a wake-up call, perhaps too late. Everyone is on survival mode right now and there are still rough waters ahead. Today doesn't seem to be the day for big-picture industry analysis, but when the dust settles and the pain of layoffs is not so fresh for people, it'll be time to sit down and ask ourselves some tough questions about how we got here. I'm getting tired of saying it, but my heart goes out to all those affected by the current round of layoffs and closures. 💔
