🎮Monthly External Game Dev Pulse🎮 May’s game dev pulse survey is now open! https://lnkd.in/g5u25bmM If you are an external development professional within video games, please take 5-10 minutes to complete this short survey. This pulse closes on Friday, June 14, 2024 @ 5pm PST. I release these pulse’s on a monthly basis, and as a thank you I share the key data and insights with this community on Linkedin. This monthly pulse is used to gain regular snapshots in time of the industry-wide vision on External Development, with an aim to provide video games professionals the data needed to lean on external development to create increased development stability. There are a few differences in this pulse compared to last months: • A choice has been added to determine whether you are a buyer or seller of services. • The questions are now multiple choice - taking the top answers from last month's survey - with room to add other answers if required. • A bonus question has been added based on a response that gained the most intrigue from April’s survey: what can this community do to more successfully highlight diverse regions for services? I hope for a large pool of diverse participants - both on the buyer and seller sides - so if you see the value in this initiative please complete this survey, and share this post with your network. If you are interested in reading the report from April’s pulse survey, you can find a link to it in the Featured section of my LinkedIn profile. If you have any feedback for how we can make the most of this initiative, or improve the pulse for future releases, please let me know your perspectives through a LinkedIn message. Thank you.

I worked closely with Vini at TC and he is a top-notch Production-pro and wonderful human being <3
Today we received the difficult news that Timbre Studios is closing its doors. This is an extremely challenging moment for me, my family, and for all my incredible team, best known as Timbreroos. I learned that life sometimes has its ups and downs and I want to focus my energy and strength where I believe I can be impactful – making positive changes for people, helping them out, and crafting incredible games. I can’t stress enough how passionate, talented, and exceptional our team at Timbre is. What we were creating together was truly special and it is hard to see that coming to a stop. Here's what's coming up for me, my key strengths, and ways you can support us: TL;DR: 1. Now until July: I’ll support my Timbre colleagues, connect with recruiters, and visit my family who I haven’t seen in two years. 2. August onwards: move onto my next full-time job in Production. The top 3 reasons you want to work with me: 1. I’ve spent over 13 years working on project management / game production, including 5 years at Xbox/Microsoft Studios with multiple disciplines from pre-production to live operations. 2. Amplifying my team’s strengths is my passion. I love balancing project goals with a healthy, player-centric development. 3. I love games. My passion for video games and helping people was the main reason why I specialized in game production. The best 3 ways you can help 1. Hire Us! The team at Timbre is exceptional. If you have any open roles or questions, feel free to reach out. 2. Network and write a Recommendation. Feel free to connect and share a recommendation if we ever worked together. 3. Share this post. The more people who see this, the faster we can find opportunities for everyone. #timbregameslayoffs #sumodigital

🎮The results from my first Monthly External Game Dev Pulse are released!🎮 (attempt 2, as my first attempt/post was an incorrect image!) A big thank you to those who participated in the Monthly External Game Dev Pulse survey. The goal for this survey is to start to gain a continuous pulse on the health and impact of external development in the video games industry. Here are the main insights collected from April’s data: • For the month of April 2024, a big focus for many respondents was to secure new clients and projects. Preparing for company growth - and establishing company values and processes to assist this growth - was also reported. • Respondents saw positive changes in their team processes, and many reported to have gained more work with clients. It was also great to see that almost 15% of companies are planning their expansion to accommodate demand from potential clients. • In contrast to positive reports of companies gaining more work with clients, some respondents reported a difficulty in securing clients, which is a sad reflection of a trend well documented in today’s media for the industry. Another interesting point was the need for clients to accept and embrace the cultural differences of their external partners - a point that we can all do our part to continually educate and inform ourselves and our teams on. • Some interesting industry landscape changes were observed, and not unexpectedly. Reports of Buyers scaling externally rather than internally have been a big discussion point within the external development community in recent months, which was reflected by nearly 20% of respondents. Sellers have also witnessed faster negotiations and less hesitancy to sign than previous months, which could signal a thirst and competition for external development, and yet, budgets and price sensitivity is top of mind. • Overall, industry Stability was a big focus for this survey. A common theme amongst survey respondents was that we should prioritize games as a craft over the PnL; devs want to be devs and make games that they love. A few things to note from this data: • I did not include a question asking the respondents whether they were reporting from a Buyer or Seller. This will be addressed in the next survey round. • From April’s survey, I estimate that 14 Buyers participated, with one respondent being unknown (I hope to encourage more responses from the Buyer community for May’s pulse survey). • As the data was submitted as open paragraphs, I have pulled my own interpretations of this data to create the condensed version you are seeing. I hope you enjoyed this data, and if you have any questions please feel free to post them in the comments. I’d be happy to hear about the types of data you’d like to see in the future, and ideas for improving the value of this survey over time. Please keep an eye open for May’s Pulse Survey at the start of June, the data of which will once again be shared with you all on LinkedIn as a thank you.

A member of the XDS Advisory Committee is #opentowork. He is one of the great minds in external development and a bloomin’ great guy.
The last 7 days has been one of the worst weeks of my career. 3 projects of absolutely stunning quality were halted. Nearly 150 of my colleagues at Phoenix Labs - many of them my friends - were laid off. Dozens of service providers have had their contracts terminated, and I've been the messenger delivering that news. It's been stressful, exhausting, and utterly heartbreaking. And that's all before I grapple with the fact that I'm one of the people who's been laid off. I'll be staying on for a couple of months to help manage the transition, but it feels utterly surreal that by the end of the summer I won't work at Phoenix Labs anymore - my second home for the last 5 years. But here's the thing: if I take even a moment to reflect, it's hard to feel anything but grateful. This last week is just one short chapter of a much larger story. Working at Phoenix Labs changed my life, and overwhelmingly for the better. The last 7 days has been one of the worst weeks of my career. The last 5 years have been unquestionably the best of my career. I have a lot more to say about this experience, particularly about our absolutely world-class external partners. But to start things off, I want to thank the Phoenix Labs external development team. Thank you, Billy Buskell; thank you, Michael Read; thank you, Lauren Lee; and with all the force and sincerity that comes from shared struggles, thank you, Phil Yee. I truly could not have made it without you. It's been a wild ride. This is me, #opentowork.
