Nozarashi (野晒) is the manifested spirit of Kenpachi Zaraki's Zanpakutō.
Appearance
It is unknown what Nozarashi naturally looks like. When manifesting herself in front of Kenpachi to unlock their Bankai, Nozarashi took on the appearance of Yachiru Kusajishi.
Personality
Not much is known about Nozarashi's personality. During Ichigo Kurosaki's fight against Kenpachi Zaraki, Zangetsu mentioned that he could hear Nozarashi screaming her name towards an ignorant Zaraki.
The one time Nozarashi manifested herself in front of Zaraki, she took on the mannerisms of Yachiru Kusajishi.
Plot
Soul Society arc
During Kenpachi Zaraki's fight against Ichigo Kurosaki, Zangetsu mentioned that he could hear Nozarashi screaming towards an ignorant Zaraki.[2] After Kenpachi is defeated by Ichigo, he finally attempts to listen to Nozarashi, but is unable to before passing out.[3]
The Thousand-Year Blood War arc
Nozarashi finally manages to communicate with her master.
After Kenpachi's duel with Retsu Unohana has concluded, Kenpachi hears a voice calling out to him, and as he turns, he realizes the voice came from his Zanpakutō.[4]
When Kenpachi is lying on the ground after fighting Gerard Valkyrie, Nozarashi appears to him, manifesting herself as his former lieutenant, Yachiru Kusajishi. Nozarashi tells him that if he uses her properly, he can beat anyone. She touches his hand and Reiatsu starts emanating from it. Nozarashi tells Kenpachi that this is the power everyone calls Bankai. He then activates his Bankai[5] and attacks Gerard, but during the course of the ensuing battle, his arm is torn. Nozarashi notes that she released too much power at once. She apologizes to him, noting that his body is not able to handle so much power.[6]
Trivia
- According to Q&A #151 by Tite Kubo on his fansite "Klub Outside", Yachiru Kusajishi is the Bankai manifestation of Nozarashi, of whom the true Spirit resembles an adult woman. Yachiru's relationship with Nozarashi is comparable to Tensa Zangetsu and Zangetsu's relationship.
