Kisuke Urahara (浦原 喜助, Urahara Kisuke) is the former captain of the 12th Division, as well as the founder and 1st President of the S.R.D.I.. His lieutenant was Hiyori Sarugaki. He lives in the Human World where he owns a small convenience store which sells Shinigami items. He is assisted by his employees Tessai Tsukabishi, Jinta Hanakari, and Ururu Tsumugiya.
Personality[]
By Urahara's own accounts, he does not consider himself a good or moral person, regardless of what view others may have of him. As he notes to Yoruichi, he never created something as powerful and dangerous as the Hōgyoku for any higher purpose other than to satisfy his own curiosity, regardless of the threat he knew the orb posed. Urahara even expressed a belief he is not so different in his scientific morals than Mayuri Kurotsuchi is, and contemplated having Shūhei Hisagi silenced were it not for the reporter believing Urahara created the Hōgyoku for benevolent purposes. Adding to this, Urahara claims that should his sins ever catch up to him, he would prefer it to be the likes of Hisagi, Ichigo Kurosaki, or Rukia Kuchiki who would be responsible for bringing him to justice.[1]

Bleach: Can't Fear Your Own World[]
Shortly after defeating Askin Nakk Le Vaar, Urahara, Grimmjow Jaegerjaquez, Yoruichi Shihōin, and Yūshirō Shihōin are rescued from the Sternritter's Gift Ball Deluxe by Nelliel Tu Odelschwanck.[2] After recovering, Urahara proceeds to construct new bindings to imprison Sōsuke Aizen in Muken.[3]
Six months later, Urahara agrees to an interview with Shūhei Hisagi concerning his role in the Quincy Blood War. As the two discuss Urahara's history in Karakura Town, the topic of Isshin Shiba and Masaki Kurosaki's relationship is brought up, with Hisagi agreeing with Urahara that Soul Society is not yet ready to know about Ichigo Kurosaki's Quincy heritage. After some banter, the two get to the core of the matter: Urahara's involvement in the events of the Soul King Palace. While Urahara tries to greatly downplay his actions during the conflict, Hisagi realizes that the man is dodging the issue intentionally, and decides to press on about Urahara's past.[4]
The two are temporarily interrupted by the eavesdropping Jinta Hanakari and Ururu Tsumugiya, and after Urahara sends them on an errand, decides to talk about the two children instead. Urahara confirms Hisagi's suspicions that the two are indeed artificial beings similar but not identical to Nemu Kurotsuchi. As Urahara continues to dodge Hisagi's questions, Hisagi decides to switch tactics. Hisagi decides to ask a more personal question to Urahara and brings up his encounter with the mysterious Hikone Ubuginu and Seinosuke Yamada. After hearing everything that happened, Urahara first divulges what he knows about Seinosuke. He admits that while Seinosuke is an exceptional physician who takes his profession very seriously, he also has a disturbing lack of ethics when it comes to performing his duties; not only did this cause a lot of friction between him and the late Retsu Unohana, but also is the reason Seinosuke was forced to retire.[4]
Moving on, Urahara asks Hisagi about Hikone's strange Reiatsu, and Hisagi confirms that the child's Reiatsu felt like a "patchwork combination" of Shinigami, Hollow, and Quincy, as well as that Hikone used Garganta to travel rather than a Senkaimon. Hearing this, Urahara becomes lost in thought until Hisagi says that he never felt Reiatsu like it. Urahara turns to him and says that Ichigo Kurosaki, while far more subtle, has such Reiatsu as well. Shocking Hisagi, Urahara reveals that there is a third person with such Reiatsu as well: Kūgo Ginjō, the first Substitute Shinigami.[4]
As Hisagi wonders why Urahara brought up Ginjō's name, revealing he recently met Ginjō in the Rukongai, Urahara decides to explain the concept of Fullbringer to Hisagi. According to Urahara, among the intelligent races in the worlds, Fullbringers are, in essence, a forced change derived from Humans. When Urahara gives Orihime Inoue and Yasutora Sado as examples of known Fullbringers, he explains that while the process was different with those two, as the Hōgyoku was involved, the principle remains the same.[5]
Urahara further details that Fullbringers are born when a Human fetus survives a Hollow attack on its mother while still in the womb; the infusion of Hollow Reiatsu in the fetus allows it to awaken the Fullbring powers in itself in the future. While Hisagi expresses how lucky they must be to have survived a direct Hollow attack, Urahara expresses his suspicion at the fact that Shinigami or Quincy always arrived at a critical moment to save them, and wonders how much more Soul Society knows about Fullbringers then it lets on.[5]
Urahara reveals that for the Shinigami's supposed knowledge of future Fullbring births, Nayura Amakado confirmed that the Daireishokairō is surprisingly devoid of almost all information about the subject. This causes Urahara to suspect the involvement of the Visual Department, and by extension the Tsunayashiro family, in withholding the information. Due to this, Urahara asks Hisagi to use his position as a journalist to dig further into what he can find. While initially reluctant, Hisagi agrees.[5]
Afterwards, Hisagi asks Urahara if he still has contact with the remaining Arrancar. Urahara merely replies that he believes maintaining peace with them is essential, especially since Harribel and Nelliel are far more reasonable than the rest of their kin and currently lead Hueco Mundo. Urahara also expresses his belief that, while very hostile, Grimmjow is not a mindless killer like most Hollows or Arrancar are either.[6]
Hisagi then argues that while, Arrancar are indeed not absolute evil as the Shinigami are usually taught, it still does not change the fact that most of them sided with Aizen to destroy the Shinigami. Urahara explains to him that powerful Menos-class Arrancar are an aggregation of thousands upon thousands of souls, and while he is not sure if the resulting personality and beliefs are either an amalgamation of those souls, or a single one that dominates the others, it does not change the fact that they are still just as capable of reasoning as Shinigami are, which should allow for peaceful dialogue. As the conversation shifts towards Hisagi's killing of the Hollowfied Kaname Tōsen, and his subsequent regret and issues, Urahara suddenly jumps up and grabs his Zanpakutō. He asks a confused Hisagi if he can arrange a Gentei Kaijo before revealing that he senses the entirety of Karakura Town is surrounded and isolated by an unidentified force.[6]
Inventions[]
Having founded the research institute in Soul Society, Kisuke has developed a number of unique items. The notable ones are below:
- Hōgyoku (崩玉, Crumbling Orb): A small orb which was initially believed to only be capable of dissolving the boundary between a Shinigami and a Hollow and vice-versa.[7] However, according to Aizen, its true ability is materializing the inner desires of the people around it.[8]
- Artificial Soul Creation: Through a similar, but not identical means to Mayuri's Nemuri Project, Urahara created Jinta Hanakari and Ururu Tsumugiya, two Artificial Souls.[4] By his own admission, they are "quite different" from Nemu Kurotsuchi, but have proven capable of easily defeating Hollows and even briefly fending off Arrancar.[9]
- Tenkai Kecchu (転界結柱, World-Shifting Binding-Posts): A device which creates an enormous, one spiritual unit of area radius Senkaimon bound by four linked points. When activated, the device swaps something that it encircles with something else in Soul Society.[10]
- Portable Gentei Kaijo: A special injection that, when used, forcibly removes the Gentei Reīn seal on a Shinigami without needing permission from Soul Society to do so.[11]
Powers & Abilities[]
Immense Spiritual Power: As a former captain of the 12th Division, Urahara boasts great amounts of spiritual energy. He is capable of fighting evenly with Aura Michibane, a Fullbringer with powers far beyond the norm, and casting the highest level Kidō in succession without tiring. Shūhei Hisagi commented on his immense power as they fought, calling it tremendous and far superior to his own.[12]
Kidō Master: Urahara is a master in the use of Hadō and Bakudō spells. His skill in Kidō allows him to cast Hadō #99. Goryūtenmetsu without incantation, just shortly after casting Hadō #91. Senju Kōten Taihō.[12]
Genius Intellect: Urahara has proven himself to be the most intelligent being both within and outside Soul Society. He was entrusted to create bindings for restraining Sōsuke Aizen after he became more powerful than his Hōgyoku-infused forms.[3] Urahara correctly deduced that Mayuri Kurotsuchi celebrated his achievements with his Nemuri Project after he defeated Pernida Parnkgjas, and repeatedly dodged Hisagi's questions during their interview, only answering on his own terms and even turned the interview against him.[4] Kensei Muguruma was confident that in a one-on-one fight, Urahara would eventually find a way to defeat Hikone Ubuginu, despite not being as powerful.[13] Urahara is even perceptive enough that, when Yukio contacted him, he noticed that the static signals produced by Yukio's Fullbring contained a coded message meant only for him, a message composed of both binary and Morse code.[13]
