Izumi Ishida (石田 依澄, Ishida Izumi) was an Echt Quincy as well as the wife of Sōken Ishida, the mother of Ryūken Ishida, the mother-in-law of Kanae Ishida and the paternal grandmother of Uryū Ishida.

Appearance[]

Izumi was a black-haired woman with short hair. She wore a cardigan along with a inner-shirt and long skirt or a maxi dress. She had a scar on her lower calf of the left leg.[1]

Personality[]

Izumi was a stern woman, who took her responsibilities as matriarch of the Ishida family seriously. She cared greatly about keeping the Quincy Bloodline of the Ishida family pure, due to the Quincy being an endangered race.[2] She also cared deeply about her son, Ryūken, and was distraught when he left their residence with the infected Masaki Kurosaki.[3]

According to her son, Izumi is frustrated that her husband, Sōken, spends a lot of time away from his family, and she vents that frustration upon Masaki.[4]

History[]

At some point, Izumi adopted Masaki Kurosaki into the Ishida family, so that Masaki would be protected as one of the last Quincy, and so that one day she would marry her son, Ryūken Ishida, and keep the Quincy Bloodline of the Ishida family pure, due to the Quincy being an endangered race. One day, during dinner, Izumi inquires to Masaki about how school is going, as well as her Seiren. Masaki says that she is making slow progress, to which Izumi reprimands her, saying that Masaki is the last of the Kurosaki family, and that she is supposed to be training as a Quincy. Ryūken then enters and tells his mother that she is being too loud, to which she responds by saying that she is going to her room and that she will have Ryūken's food prepared. Ryūken inquires about his father, and Izumi replies by saying that she does not know when he will return.[5]

Several days later, Izumi greets Masaki as she comes home from school, and reveals she is disappointed in her. Izumi scolds Masaki for breaking the Quincy rules and saving a Shinigami from a Hollow. Masaki denies it, to which Izumi states that she has proof. As Izumi and Masaki are arguing, Ryūken attempts to take the blame for the incident. Masaki interrupts, telling Ryūken to not try to take the fall for her, but collapses mid-sentence. Izumi is the first to notice the cause: a Hollow-like hole that appeared on her chest. Ryūken lifts up Masaki and asks his mother where his father is. She states that she doesn't know, and has been trying to get in touch with him. Ryūken then rushes out of the house with Masaki still in his arms, leaving Izumi shouting at him and begging for him to come back.[6]

Powers and Abilities[]

Reishi Manipulation: As a Quincy, she primarily absorbed spiritual energy from the atmosphere, and combined it with her own spiritual energy to form weapons.[7] She had an easier time collecting this energy in environments with higher concentrations of Reishi such as in Soul Society or Hueco Mundo.[8]

Spiritual Awareness: As a Quincy, Izumi could sense Shinigami, Hollows, and other spiritual beings.

Quotes[]

  • (To Masaki Kurosaki) "Are you not fully aware of your position?! With the previous generation passed away and no siblings to your name you are the sole remaining member of the Kurosaki clan!! It is out of concern for a fellow Quincy that I have taken you in!!"[9]
  • (To Masaki Kurosaki) "Lying does not befit a lady. Why did you not tell me of this? No, more to the point... Why did you do such a thing in the first place?! Does the concept of shame mean nothing to you?! My girl... The Ishida family has taken you in and you reward us by breaking Quincy law?!"[10]

Trivia[]

  • Izumi was left unnamed in the original manga chapters. Her name was only revealed in the anime adaptation of the Thousand-Year Blood War arc.
