Out of print Australian cookbook by beloved chef Peter Gilmore which is featured on The Bear is now selling for £475 online

From appearing at food festivals to racking up awards, The Bear has become a huge cultural phenomenon.

And now eagle-eyed viewers of The Bear have spotted lead character Chef Carmen 'Carmy' Berzatto with an ultra sort-after cookbook.   

The hit American culinary dramedy, which was created by Christopher Storer shows that Carmy, played by,  Jeremy Allen White owns a a cookbook  by Australian chef Peter Gilmore.

 Gilmore, who is the executive chef of Sydney fine dining restaurants Quay and Bennelong, has not one but two of his titles featured in the FX's original series.

His second cookbook Organum: Nature Texture Intensity Purity, which is spotted in Carmy's apartment in seasons one and three, is even fetching for $900(AUD, £475) on Amazon.

Although still available digitally for a more modest price of $30, the physical edition from 2014 is out of print therefore is in hot demand, according to The Guardian.

Meanwhile Gilmore's first book Quay: Food Inspired by Nature sits on the office bookshelf of Carmy's restaurant in season two, next to another book on Spain's two Michelin Star restaurant Mugaritz. 

However the presence of the Australian titles on an American TV show is intentional, according to The Bear's set decorator, Eric Frankel.

He said: 'From my first conversations with [The Bear's creator] Chris Storer when we started designing the show, it was very important to showcase cookbooks from all over the world.

'He supplied me a list of books he really wanted to have and then I spent weeks researching more. Quay and Organum are both what I would consider iconic books.'

Jane Morrow, Murdoch Books' publishing director, added: 'Quay by Peter Gilmore was an absolute phenomenon, it was a lavish book, reprinted six times and an industry must-have. Of course Carmy has a copy!' 

The Bear debuted to its highest numbers ever for its third season. The show racked up more than 5.4 million worldwide views in its initial four days of streaming, Hulu announced on Monday, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The dramatic comedy, which received strong feedback on social media following the debut of season three, had its best numbers since its debut in 2022 when it began streaming on Hulu June 27.

The cast includes Ayo Edebiri as Sydney Adamu. Ebon Moss-Bachrach, Lionel Boyce, Liza Colón-Zayas, Abby Elliott, Edwin Lee Gibson, Matty Matheson, Corey Hendrix and Oliver Platt.

The 5.4 million total represents full showings of the 36-minute-long debut episode, which is titled Tomorrow, according to the outlet.

The total marks a 24 percent spike since the show's June 2023 season two debut, which had around 4.35 million views.

It represents a highwater mark for the show over a span of four days, as well as Hulu's most-ever for an FX season debut or scripted series, according to THR.

Hulu said that the show's ratings were the third-highest for an original season premiere. Outside of the U.S., the series can be seen on the Disney+ streaming service.

The Bear has gained momentum over the past few years, as its second season was in the Nielsen Top 10 for a five-week span in June of 2023.

The storyline of season three sees Carmy as he works to navigate the transition of his beef shop into a fine dining establishment, and his relationships with his peers. 

At the end of season 2, The Beef had been fully transformed into the fine dining establishment The Bear and Carmy was locked in the walk-in freezer.

According to an official synopsis from FX, In season 3 fans will see the unlikely trio 'do what it takes to elevate The Bear, their beef stand turned fine dining establishment, to the highest level, all while doing their best just to stay in business.

'Their quest for culinary excellence will propel the crew to new levels and stress the bonds that hold the restaurant together,' the description continued.

'Our chefs have learned that every second counts, but this season we'll find out if they have what it takes to make it to tomorrow.'
