Business management

Steve Sachs, managing director

Bringing over 20 years of business and leadership experience at both for-profit and non-profit digital media companies and brands across the US, Steve joined the Guardian in October of 2022, after co-founding Recode the Quo, an organization focused on helping Austin, Texas tech startups build more diverse, inclusive and equitable companies. In this role, Steve oversees the strategic direction and overall growth of the US business while ensuring continued financial support for its journalistic mission in the American market which has shown an increasing appetite for objective, socially impactful news.

Since 2013, Steve has also served as a board member for the non-profit news organization the Texas Tribune, and as advisor for the launch of Cityside, an Oakland, California-based non-profit news organization.

Nataki Williams, senior vice president of finance

A global finance professional for over two decades, Nataki joined the Guardian in June of 2021 where she oversees all financial functions for the US business as it continues to grow in the North American market. Before this, she served as vice president of finance at Coach, USA where she was a principal member of the global executive team, responsible for financial operations, business support services and financial oversight. She also spent seven years at Viacom where she was vice president of international financial planning and analysis. She has held several positions at other global industry-leading organizations such as Johnson & Johnson.

Luis Romero, senior vice president of advertising for North America

Luis joined the Guardian in 2022 to head the North American revenue team. He oversees all outputs including Sales, Marketing, Research, Ad Ops, and Account Management and establishes both US and Canadian sales strategies to steer the US organization to successful plan execution. Before his appointment, he was Senior Director of Brand Partnerships, Multicultural Sales & Marketing at leading digital video publisher Group Nine Media. He was responsible for developing its multicultural business needs, marketplace positioning, branded content best practices, and creating best-in-class content programs for clients and agencies. With more than two decades of experience, Luis has served as Senior Vice President of Digital and Linear Sales at NBCUniversal and held leadership roles within numerous major media companies, including Univision and Katz Media Group.

Rachel Sturm, associate director, consumer revenue

Rachel joined the Guardian in 2019, after holding a number of analytical and revenue management roles at Quartz. Prior to that, she worked as a consultant for Accenture. With almost a decade of experience, Rachel currently works to ensure the longevity and financial support for the organization.

Ian Japal, human resources director

Prior to joining the Guardian in 2022, Ian was most recently at T-Mobile, where he spent 12 years in senior human resources roles partnering closely with leadership to provide support for over 1200 employees in engineering and operations. He has extensive experience in fostering organizational success through effective HR practices and programs, including talent acquisition, coaching, organizational design and effectiveness, training and leadership development, as well as diversity, equity and inclusion.

Ian has held human resources roles across many industries, from consumer electronics to investment banking and financial services.

Betsy Reed, editor of Guardian US

An accomplished editor with more than 20 years of media experience, Betsy joined the Guardian in September 2022 after serving as editor-in-chief at The Intercept for seven years. During her tenure, the organization developed a reputation for agenda-setting investigative journalism, winning several prestigious awards, including a Polk Award, and for successfully establishing a journalism-driven membership program.

Prior to joining The Intercept, Betsy was executive editor of The Nation, where she led the magazine’s investigative coverage while also editing and writing political commentary. She has also edited several books.

Jane Spencer, deputy editor and senior vice president, strategy

Before joining the Guardian, Jane helped launch several journalism startups. She was editor-in-chief at Fusion Media Group, executive editor of The Daily Beast, and a launch advisor at The Marshall Project. As a reporter for The Wall Street Journal, she was part of a team that won the 2007 Pulitzer Prize for international reporting.

Dana Canedy, managing editor of Guardian US

Canedy is a distinguished journalist and editor, and an experienced senior executive in the country’s leading news and publishing organisations. Before joining the Guardian, she spent more than 20 years at The New York Times, where she held a number of roles, including national correspondent, bureau chief, and senior editor.

Before rejoining the Guardian in 2018, Paul worked for Devex as head of news. Prior to that, he was senior executive editor, digital at Al Jazeera and worked as a US and foreign correspondent for the Observer and Guardian.
