Portugal's last-16 match against Slovenia was a game of epic personal drama and tears for Cristiano Ronaldo. His extra-time spot kick was saved by Slovenia goalkeeper Jan Oblak, leaving the Portugal captain in tears. Ronaldo was consoled by his teammates before play restarted and, with regulation and extra time finishing 0-0, he was eventually triumphant when they went to penalties. Ronaldo scored his and Portugal's first goal in the shootout, and with teammate Diogo Costa saving all three of Slovenia's kicks from Josip Ilicic, Jure Balkovec and Benjamin Verbič, Portugal went through to the quarter-finals.
