What is Sexual Harassment
Unwelcome sexual advances, requests for sexual favors, and
other verbal or physical conduct of a sexual nature that tends to
create a hostile or offensive work environment.
Ex: Offensive Language, unwanted pressure for date, sexually
oriented postures etc.
Where does it happen
• The place of harassment occurrence may vary from school,
university, workplace and other
• The incident can take place in situations in which the harassed
person may not be aware of or understand what is happening
Who is the perpetrator
• a teacher or professor
• a student
• a friend
• or a stranger
The perpetrator can be anyone, such as
• a client
• a co-worker
• a parent
• legal guardian
• relative
Note
• The perpetrator does not have to be of the opposite sex
• The victim and perpetrator can be any gender
• The victim does not have to be the person directly harassed but
can be a witness of such behavior who finds the behavior
offensive and is affected by it
Effects on the Victim
Adverse effects on the target are common in the form of
• stress
• social withdrawal
• sleep and eating difficulties
• overall health impairment
• loss of trust in environments similar to where the harassment occurred
• And many more depending upon the depth of the matter.
How to deal with it
• Know the difference
• Stop it as soon as it gets
uncomfortable
Dealing with it
Inform
• concerned authorities (if at work)
• People you trust (if you know its happening or gonna happen)
Other things which can be done
• Learn to defend yourself
• Carry something for safety ( for ex: pepper spray )
• Most importantly have the courage to do something about it
What others should or shouldn`t do
Others should
• Provide help to the victim
• Inform nearest police station or contact helpline number
What others Shouldn`t do
• Ignore these types of scenario
• Be a bystander

What is Gender Discrimination
• Sexism or gender discrimination is
prejudice or discrimination based on a
person's sex or gender. Sexist attitudes may
stem from traditional stereotypes of gender
roles, and may include the belief that a
person of one sex is intrinsically superior to
a person of the other.
Where does this happen
It happens in almost every sector regardless of their formality

• Workplace
• Home
• Religions
• Education Hub
Lawsuits regarding Sexism
Here are some civil rights regarding sexism
• Civil Rights Act of 1964: Title VII (Equal Employment Opportunities)
• The Equal Credit Opportunity Act
• Equal Pay Act of 1963
• Pregnancy Discrimination Act (EEOC)
Some Special Notes
We know that victim can be anyone but in India discriminatory
attitude towards men and women have existed for generations and
affect the lives of both genders. Although the constitution of
India has granted men and women equal rights, gender disparity
still remains.
There is specific research on gender discrimination mostly in
favour of men over women. Due to a lack of objective research
on gender discrimination against men, it is perceived that it is only
women who are suffering. The research often conducted is
selectively sampled, where men are left out of the picture. Women
are perceived to be disadvantaged at work, and conclusions are
drawn that their capabilities are often underestimated.
Discrimination towards men
Judiciary discrimination
• There are many laws including 498a, false
rape laws etc., favoring women to greater
extent. If a man files a rape complaint, its
not considered as rape, since rape clearly is
for men and not for women. If a woman
rapes man then court cant punish her.
Breach of promise of marriage
• This is considered as rape by many High
courts. Only in the Honourable Supreme
Court of India, one might expect justice, by
then half of the guys life would have gone
for a toss.

How to deal with it
• One should know about the laws against sexism.
• One should know that which discrimination falls under which law
Most importantly, one should have the courage to stand up against what is right
or wrong.

Obscene or Foul Language
(Profanity)
Objectives
To clear the concept of swearing, i.e. Excessive use of foul or obscene language

• What are the affects
• Where is it taking us
• How to stop it
What is Profanity
• Profanity - in its more literal sense - means "offensive words used in a way that
shows disrespect ".
• A more general modern meaning which defines profanity as "an offensive word" or
"offensive language". This second use is also called bad language, strong
language, coarse language, foul language, bad words, vulgar language, lewd
language, swearing, cursing, cussing, or using expletives.
• Strong offensive words used as emotionally arousing stimuli to represent anger,
humor etc.
Why use it
Why do people swear?
• For some it makes them feel better
• For some it is like desperate times calls for desperate measures
• For some it is like bonding
• Some makes cliché making even normal words sound vulgar
• And some can`t just help it
What are the effects
• It gives a bad impression
• It makes one unpleasant to be
with
• It endangers relationships
• It show one`s control on
themselves
• It reflects ignorance
• It offends more people than we
think especially sensitive people.
• It turns discussions into
arguments
• It can be a sign of hostility
• It can led to violence
• It is contagious
Where is it taking us
• Use of offensive or foul language is degrading our social relationships.
• It is bringing about a drastic change especially in the youth today.
• It is leading to the breakdown of society with people losing the decency to
communicate.
• This would further lead to an even more rash generation that would follow us.
• It can have a very negative impact on our professional life when offensive language
is used in work sector.
How to Stop it
• People habituated to using foul language should
start by gradually decreasing the number of foul
words they use per day till they stop completely.
• By avoiding the company of people who use foul
language excessively.
• By understanding that the use of offensive
language could hurt the opposite person.

Sexual Harassment, Gender Discrimination and Sexism

  • 1. Sexual Harassment • What is Sexual Harassment • Where does it happen • Who is the perpetrator • Effects on the victim • How to deal with it • What others should or shouldn`t do
  • 2. What is Sexual Harassment Unwelcome sexual advances, requests for sexual favors, and other verbal or physical conduct of a sexual nature that tends to create a hostile or offensive work environment. Ex: Offensive Language, unwanted pressure for date, sexually oriented postures etc.
  • 3. Where does it happen • The place of harassment occurrence may vary from school, university, workplace and other • The incident can take place in situations in which the harassed person may not be aware of or understand what is happening
  • 4. Who is the perpetrator • a teacher or professor • a student • a friend • or a stranger The perpetrator can be anyone, such as • a client • a co-worker • a parent • legal guardian • relative
  • 5. Note • The perpetrator does not have to be of the opposite sex • The victim and perpetrator can be any gender • The victim does not have to be the person directly harassed but can be a witness of such behavior who finds the behavior offensive and is affected by it
  • 6. Effects on the Victim Adverse effects on the target are common in the form of • stress • social withdrawal • sleep and eating difficulties • overall health impairment • loss of trust in environments similar to where the harassment occurred • And many more depending upon the depth of the matter.
  • 7. How to deal with it • Know the difference • Stop it as soon as it gets uncomfortable
  • 8. Dealing with it Inform • concerned authorities (if at work) • People you trust (if you know its happening or gonna happen) Other things which can be done • Learn to defend yourself • Carry something for safety ( for ex: pepper spray ) • Most importantly have the courage to do something about it
  • 9. What others should or shouldn`t do Others should • Provide help to the victim • Inform nearest police station or contact helpline number What others Shouldn`t do • Ignore these types of scenario • Be a bystander

  • 13. What is Gender Discrimination • Sexism or gender discrimination is prejudice or discrimination based on a person's sex or gender. Sexist attitudes may stem from traditional stereotypes of gender roles, and may include the belief that a person of one sex is intrinsically superior to a person of the other.
  • 14. Where does this happen It happens in almost every sector regardless of their formality For example : There are sexual differences at : • Workplace • Home • Religions • Education Hub
  • 15. Lawsuits regarding Sexism Here are some civil rights regarding sexism • Civil Rights Act of 1964: Title VII (Equal Employment Opportunities) • The Equal Credit Opportunity Act • Equal Pay Act of 1963 • Pregnancy Discrimination Act (EEOC)
  • 16. Some Special Notes We know that victim can be anyone but in India discriminatory attitude towards men and women have existed for generations and affect the lives of both genders. Although the constitution of India has granted men and women equal rights, gender disparity still remains. There is specific research on gender discrimination mostly in favour of men over women. Due to a lack of objective research on gender discrimination against men, it is perceived that it is only women who are suffering. The research often conducted is selectively sampled, where men are left out of the picture. Women are perceived to be disadvantaged at work, and conclusions are drawn that their capabilities are often underestimated.
  • 17. Discrimination towards men Judiciary discrimination • There are many laws including 498a, false rape laws etc., favoring women to greater extent. If a man files a rape complaint, its not considered as rape, since rape clearly is for men and not for women. If a woman rapes man then court cant punish her. Breach of promise of marriage • This is considered as rape by many High courts. Only in the Honourable Supreme Court of India, one might expect justice, by then half of the guys life would have gone for a toss. And there are many more for ex 
  • 18. How to deal with it • One should know about the laws against sexism. • One should know that which discrimination falls under which law Most importantly, one should have the courage to stand up against what is right or wrong.
  • 20. Obscene or Foul Language (Profanity)
  • 21. Objectives To clear the concept of swearing, i.e. Excessive use of foul or obscene language • What is Profanity • Why use it • What are the affects • Where is it taking us • How to stop it
  • 22. What is Profanity • Profanity - in its more literal sense - means "offensive words used in a way that shows disrespect ". • A more general modern meaning which defines profanity as "an offensive word" or "offensive language". This second use is also called bad language, strong language, coarse language, foul language, bad words, vulgar language, lewd language, swearing, cursing, cussing, or using expletives. • Strong offensive words used as emotionally arousing stimuli to represent anger, humor etc.
  • 23. Why use it Why do people swear? • For some it makes them feel better • For some it is like desperate times calls for desperate measures • For some it is like bonding • Some makes cliché making even normal words sound vulgar • And some can`t just help it
  • 24. What are the effects • It gives a bad impression • It makes one unpleasant to be with • It endangers relationships • It show one`s control on themselves • It reflects ignorance • It offends more people than we think especially sensitive people. • It turns discussions into arguments • It can be a sign of hostility • It can led to violence • It is contagious
  • 25. Where is it taking us • Use of offensive or foul language is degrading our social relationships. • It is bringing about a drastic change especially in the youth today. • It is leading to the breakdown of society with people losing the decency to communicate. • This would further lead to an even more rash generation that would follow us. • It can have a very negative impact on our professional life when offensive language is used in work sector.
  • 26. How to Stop it • People habituated to using foul language should start by gradually decreasing the number of foul words they use per day till they stop completely. • By avoiding the company of people who use foul language excessively. • By understanding that the use of offensive language could hurt the opposite person.
