A Unified Call for Respect and Inclusion
Saturday's shocking assassination attempt on a former U.S. President and current presidential candidate has left us all deeply shaken. Regardless of political beliefs or affiliations, violence of any kind against anyone under any circumstances is unacceptable.
This event serves as a stark reminder of the importance of our mission to foster civility, respect, and inclusion in every aspect of our lives, especially in the workplace. SHRM’s efforts are not just about creating better work environments—they are about building a better society for all.
We applaud our elected officials on both sides of the aisle for showing unity and support, as well as vocally calling for civility. We call upon all CEOs, CHROs, and HR professionals to lead with empathy and employ active listening as the workweek starts up again tomorrow.
The principles that guide us through challenging times like this are:
- Civility for All: Treating every individual with dignity and respect, regardless of their background or beliefs.
- Open Communication: Encouraging open, honest, and constructive dialogue in our workplaces.
- Empathy and Understanding: Striving to understand different perspectives and fostering an inclusive environment where everyone feels valued.
Now is the time to model civility in every conversation today and this coming week. If you need support on a specific issue of civility in your workplace, SHRM Ask An Advisor is available and the free Civility resources are available to all.
