How about the 'worst' players to make (at least) one ASG?
I know that Mike Williams had the highest in-season ERA of any All-Star back in 2003. He made the team with the following line at the break:

36.1 IP, 41 H, 22 BB, 19 K, 6.44 ERA, 5.67 FIP

He finished the season with a 6.14 ERA (69 ERA+ - nice), and didn't play in the majors after that year. Williams was the Pirates mandatory one representative at the game, so you could kind of blame it on that rule; he also had 25 saves, which obviously means he was clutch - but Brian Giles was still on the Pirates then, and he was slashing .306/.444/.512 (150 wRC+) at the break. They also had Jason Kendall (.308/.488/.407 at the break).

Would Brock Holt in '15 make the list?

I know the Red Sox were hot garbage that year

Holt was hitting .292/.379/.412 at the break, which is a 119 wRC+. That's not bad at all - and far from the worst that you'll find out there. Though, it probably should have been Dustin Pedroia (123 wRC+), Mookie Betts (111 wRC+ and stellar defense and base-running), or Koji Uehara (2.45 ERA and 22 saves).

A few stats for a boring Monday:
  • Despite ranking 14th all-time in walks, Pete Rose never finished higher than fourth in his league - as in the NL, not MLB as a whole - in a single season. He only broke 100 walks once.
  • Alex Rodriguez ranks 5th all-time in strikeouts, with 2287. He never finished higher than third in his league in a given season. And his career 18.7% strikeout rate is significantly better than all of the players ahead of him, and many of those immediately behind him, as well.
  • Joe Morgan stole 689 bases in his career, with high water marks of 67 (twice), 60, and 58 (twice). He never led his league in steals; though, he did finish second seven times.
And, just because it's interesting - Terrance Gore had the first hit of his career on September 8 of this year. It came in his 54th game ... but it was just his 47th plate appearance. He's played in 57 games in his career, all of which were as a defensive replacement, pinch-hitter, or pinch-runner. He's a career .071/.235/.071 hitter with 26 steals in 30 attempts.

Teddy Higuera's 9.4 WAR in 1986 is the highest single-season WAR for a Mexican player.

Robin Yount's 10.5 WAR in 1982 is the best mark by any position player in the 1980s. Cal Ripken, who posted 10.0 in 1984, is the only other player to break double-digit WAR in that decade.

Thanks to another 10-plus WAR season, Mike Trout now ranks 12th all-time among center fielders with 64.3 WAR. By peak WAR (which counts a player's seven-best seasons), he ranks 4th among CF. He's also now 99th among all position players in WAR, having surpassed the following noteworthy players this year:
  • Joe Mauer
  • David Ortiz
  • Will Clark
  • Willie Stargell
  • Hank Greenberg
  • Sammy Sosa
  • Joey Votto
  • Ichiro Suzuki
  • Vladimir Guerrero
  • Yogi Berra
  • Mike Piazza
  • Harmon Killebrew
  • Gary Sheffield
  • Jim Edmonds
  • Dave Winfield
He's 27.

Your house.
Mitch Williams of the 1989 Cubs pitched a no-pitch save against the Padres. He picked off a runner at second with two outs and a 3-1 lead in the ninth, and thus didn't pitch at all to get a save.

I figured I'd put this here but I was shocked to find that Miguel Cabrera only has 469 homers in his career and his power seems all but gone. I imagine he still gets to 500 since he's 36 and could hang around to get it but for one of the best hitters in the game over the last 15 years it came as a shock to me that he is still shy of 500 and depending on how long he keeps playing he may not get there.

I was in the mood to revive this thread a bit ... so here are a couple of fun tidbits:

-------------------------

Joe Sewell struck out 114 times in 8,329 plate appearances - or 1.4% of the time.

For comparison's sake, there have been 1,569 individual seasons in which a player has struck out at least 115 times. And that includes 74 players in 2019 alone.

-------------------------

In 2017, Matt Olson had 49 hits, broken down as follows: 23 singles, 2 doubles, 24 home runs.

If a player went 2/5 every game with a single and HR, hitting .400 for the season with 162 HRs... his OPS would still be lower than Bonds' in '04.
