Pre Season Power Rankings Pt 1

Title Contenders

1. Milwaukee Bucks

Reason for Optimism: Melo will be joining a team who has averaged 70 regular season wins since the restart and have a history of rejuvenating former all-stars. Every rotation player from last seasons championship team is also returning for another run.

Reason for Skepticism: Most of the core is on the wrong side of 30 (many being on the wrong side of 35 actually) father time could catch up to them before the rest of the league does.

2. Minnesota Timberwolves

Reason for Optimism: The reward for their deep playoff run was the prize FA of the offseason Giannis Antetokounmpo. If that wasnt enough through a series of trades they also acquired fellow top ten player Nikola Jokic

Reason for Skepticism: Lost in all the off season moves is just how big of a reason Zach Lavine was for their success. Is Haliburton ready to fill his minutes?

3. Detroit Pistons

Reason for Optimism: One of the best coached teams in the league. The new ownership quickly turned the franchise around and led them to a conference finals appearance where they were seconds away from taking a 3-2 series lead over the eventual champs.

Reason for Skepticism: Lots of roster turnover, on paper there is a lack of outside shooting.

4. Portland Trailblazers

Reason for Optimism: After two stellar seasons in Boston that ended in losses to the eventual champs LeBron packed his bags and moved West to join Paul George's Blazers who were one of the hottest teams in the league during the 2nd half of last season.

Reason for Skepticism: Paul George's level of play from last year seems somewhat unsustainable given his history up to that point.

5. LA Clippers

Reason for Optimism: The defending Western conference champs overhauled the roster around its two stars adding a couple big time scorers in Nikola Vucevic and Terry Rozier along with a few 3&D guys

Reasons for Skepticism: The Luka/AD combo didn't quite live up to expectations, with Davis never really figuring out his role in the offense.

6. Orlando Magic

Reasons for Optimism: Kawhi and Harden will have a full year together this time. Reggie Jackson joins to team to provide a 3rd offensive option.

Reasons for Skepticism: They do not have much in terms of depth, the starters will be relied to do allot of heavy lifting.

7. Philadelphia 76ers

Reasons for Optimism: New ownership pushed their chips all in this off-season dealing away former #1 overall pick Anthony Edwards and center Myles Turner for former MVP Kevin Durant. Draymond Green has also re-established himself as one of the best defensive players in the league.

Reasons for Skepticism: Neither KD nor Lillard were able to lead their teams to the playoffs last season.

Dark Horses

8. LA Lakers

Reasons for Optimism: Chris Paul is coming off of one of his best campaigns in years and should be an elite PG during the season everyone expected his contract would be an albatross.

Reasons for Skepticism: Luxury tax penalties make it very difficult to change or improve the roster. We may have already witnessed this teams ceiling.

9. New York Knicks

Reasons for Optimism: Beal is back for another go and they landed sharpshooter Joe Harris for a steal after most other teams ran out of cap room. His addition should address some floor spacing issues they had.

Reasons for Skepticism: John Wall and Kristaps Porzingis have not done enough to warrant their cap number. One of both will need to get back to All-star form if NYK has hopes of a deep playoff run

10. New Orleans Pelicans

Reasons for Optimism: A busy offseason and change in team identity, replacing more classical big men in Harrell and Drummond with modern floor spacers in Crowder and Portis

Reasons for Skepticism: The improved spacing comes at the cost of rebounding and shot blocking

11. Memphis Grizzlies

Reasons for Optimism: They found a true PG in Mike Conley and Tatum and Mitchell are still improving.

Reasons for Skepticism: I know he's an Olympic gold medalist but I still cant be comfortable with JaVale McGee as your starting center

Playoff Hopefuls

12. Charlotte Hornets

Reasons for Optimism: Offseason addistions of Joel Embiid and DeAngelo Russell to go along with top rookie PG Jalen Suggs.

Reasons for Skepticism: They weren't able to build a winner around Kawhi and Embiid didnt win allot of games in Sacramento either.

13. Chicago Bulls

Reasons for Optimism: Very balance lineup with allot of youth and a few potential all-stars.

Reasons for Skepticism: Will need someone to establish themselves as a star like Middleton has in Detroit. They will need to be extremely well coached in order to win a series in the East.

14. Brooklyn Nets

Reasons for Optimism: A team that usually out performs my expectations. Somehow turned Buddy Hield into and effective first scoring option. They have tons of length defensively, especially on the perimeter.

Reasons for Skepticism: Ben Simmons stock is at an all time low

15. Dallas Mavericks

Reasons for Optimism: Lavine is one of the more underrated players in the league and Drummond has more of a positive impact on the game than people give him credit for.

Reasons for Skepticism: Not much outside of their top three players

16. Houston Rockets

Reasons for Optimism: Trae is knocking on the door to superstar status

Reasons for Skepticism: The front court provides very little in terms of shot blocking or floor spacing.

17. Indiana Pacers

Reasons for Optimism: MPJ and SGA are good candidates for being first time all-stars and Indy can rock a solid 5-man lineup of 3 letter acronym players

Reasons for Skepticism: Could be too young to challenge for the playoffs, might still be a year away.

18. Golden State Warriors

Reasons for Optimism: Sengun is a really nice selection for a team that needs a big for the future

Reasons for Skepticism: Their top 5 lineup is very small. Booker hasn't had a winning season yet

19. Phoenix Suns

Reasons for Optimism: Randle and Wood are both coming off career years

Reasons for Skepticism: The frontcourt is crowded and Bledsoe continues to decline. Although he is still one of the best centers in the league Towns is a downgrade from Jokic.

Pre Season Power Rankings Pt 2

Likely Lottery Teams

20. Miami Heat

Reasons for Optimism: Kyle Lowry is still playing at a very high level and Clint Capela is coming off his best season

Reason for Skepticism: Oladipo needs to raise his value but that may be difficult given he is likely coming off the bench IRL

21. Toronto Raptors

Reasons for Optimism: This is a team that wants to win and that makes a big difference is this bottom third where there are multiple teams that more interested in ping pong balls. Ayton took a giant step forward.

Reasons for Skepticism: The overall talent level just isnt there yet

22. Utah Jazz

Reasons for Optimism: Zion has the potential to catapult himself into the top 10 player discussion by the all-star break .

Reasons for Skepticism: Most of the team is still on their rookie contract

23. San Antonio Spurs

Reasons for Optimism: Extremely long and athletic. Owners of 2 of the top 4 selections of the IRL draft

Reasons for Skepticism: Traded away Kyrie Irving and there is a big drop off after Jaylen Brown

24. Oklahoma City Thunder

Reason for Optimism: LaMelo looking to improve on his rookie year

Reason for Skepticism: Not sure how far you can go with Malcolm Brogdan as arguably your 2nd best player

25. Atlanta Hawks

Reasons for Optimism: It also wasn't long ago that Siakam was viewed as a potential franchise player.

Reasons for Skepticism: Majority of the roster is coming off disappointing seasons, no 2022 pick

26. Washington Wizards

Reasons for Optimism: Russell Westbrook will put up an impressive statline with no one to compete with for shots.

Reasons for Skepticism: Not good enough for the playoffs and no young stars to develop

27. Sacramento Kings

Reasons for Optimism: Playoffs are out of the question but it will be interesting to see if they can rebuild former #1 pick Markelle Fultz

Reasons for Skepticism: Best player on the roster in John Collins but he's probably better served as the 3rd guy on a good team

28. Cleveland Cavaliers

Reasons for Optimism: Lots of young players, Anthony Edwards will get an opportunity to be the focal point of the offense

Reasons for Skepticism: They weren't any good with Durant and Jrue how bad will they be now that both are gone?

29. Denver Nuggets

Reasons for Optimism: Two lottery picks on the roster that should get plenty of playing time, Nurkic and Bogdanovic could be swapped for assets at the dealine.

Reasons for Skepticism: They dont own their 2022 pick

30. Boston Celtics

Reasons for Optimism: Robert Williams could challenge for the block title with starters minutes

Reasons for Skepticism: Kevin Love serves no purpose on the roster, they would love to move him before the deadline if they can find a suitor.

Good trade. Traded a player that caused Nestle to consider changing Kit's last name as to not be associated with and some picks.
