Ending A
Ending A is the default ending you reach the first time you reach the credits. This is obtained by completing all the Story Missions in Parts 1 & 2. Make sure to save your progress after the credits roll. Your save file will now feature an “A” icon to demonstrate you’ve reached this ending.
- This ending also unlocks:
- A Departed Mother’s Diary
- Wardrobe in the Title Screen’s Options Menu
- Change Music feature - Allows you to swap the game's soundtrack with NieR:Automata's soundtrack.
Ending B
Load the file you saved after reaching Ending A. You’ll be given the option to experience Kaine’s Story. This resets the game near the start of Part 2, at the point you reverse Kaine’s petrification. All the weapons, items, experience, and quests you acquired at the time of Ending A are maintained and carry over to this playthrough. Any Part 2 Quests that you did not accept or were incomplete when you reached Ending A will be reset, and you will have the option to begin them again.
During your Ending B playthrough, you’ll revisit all the same Story Missions you had before. This time, however, certain scenes will be interrupted by novelizations of Kaine’s story and even Emil’s. This playthrough also adds new scenes to previous moments and allows you to understand the Shades’ language and hear what they’ve been saying!
Ending C
Load the file you saved after reaching Ending B. Most of the cutscenes remain the same as the previous playthrough; however, every once in a while between Story Missions, you’ll be treated to conversations between Devola and Popola. You’ll also have the option to skip the novelizations of Kaine’s and Emil’s stories.
To reach Ending C, you must finish this playthrough while obtaining all 33 weapons in the game. This includes all the weapons bought in shops, rewarded from Quests, and obtained from completing A Departed Mother’s Diary. This does not include the bonus Nier Automata weapons obtained as a promotional download. Click here to see our weapons guide. We also have a guide for A Departed Mother’s Diary - The World of Recycled Vessel.
When you go confront the Shadowlord in the final mission, make sure to save your progress on the roof of the Lost Shrine. After defeating the Shadowlord, you’ll have a new bonus battle to fight! When you’re asked to make a choice, choose to kill them. If you decide to save your game after the fight, save in a new slot!
Ending D
Load the file from before you fought the Shadowlord. During the bonus fight, choose to spare them instead. This deletes all your save data! All progress in the game from the three save files in your profile will be deleted. Though your progress is deleted, any customized settings you had (like camera speed volume, etc.) will still be stored.
Ending E
After Ending D erased all your save files, begin a new game with a new name for your protagonist. This playthrough will start you from the very beginning. Everything in the game will be the same until the Story Mission, Defeat the Giant Shade Attacking Aerie Village. This is where the new ver.1.22474487139… content begins. This playthrough will feature new story content and a new ending. This ending also connects more to the events that occur in NieR:Automata. Since much of the beginning contains the same fights you've done before, consider switch the Difficulty to Easy and toggling on the Auto-Battle feature. This can help you get through those parts quicker; then, change back to normal/hard when you reach the new content.
