The Star Ocean series has definitely had better days as of recently. Having gone back to where it all started, I can safely say the sweet spots for the series are numbers 2 and 3. It's not a bad time, but it gets better in its next couple of sequeals.

SOFD is a PSP remake of the first SNES game, using SO Second Story from PS's engine. The menus, systems, Battle, art style and all look exactly the same as the PS1 game - and it's a great thing.
The "R" version was the final version released for PS4 and Switch, with upscaled graphics, new character arts (way prettier) and voice overs.
As a game from the 90's, some core aspects like story, characters and world exploration certainly aren't in today's standards anymore, but the gameplay and customization options that were upgraded in this remake - using Star Ocean 2 from ps1 as a base - are just as good today as they were when the game released.
The game is somewhat short (around 25hours, which might be a plus as the game doesn't artificially extends itself) and has some difficulty spikes every now and then (I recommend that you spend some time in crafting forging weapons and armors to mitigate that, as well as using the training to level up faster), but it's nothing absurd.
While it's not the best star ocean game around, it's still a pretty solid classic JRPG, with lots of characters, side quests and replay value, and worth giving a shot.
