Sonic Superstars has a mix of both interesting and ill-advised new ideas, making it an enjoyable Sonic game but not exactly a Super one.

I hate being a cynic. Especially about Sonic, a series I loved as a child and which has had a lot of knocks over the years, many of them unfairly. But Sonic Superstars is bad.
The story itself is fine, if it jumps around a bit. The main issue I have is with the gameplay, which seems to involve countless cheap deaths, overlong and sometimes tedious boss fights (which are a big pain if you end up dying just before the last hit), and multiple gimmicks and 'emerald powers' per level, which can be disorienting.
It also suffers from middling presentation. Levels themselves are nicely designed, but textures look messy on Switch and the soundtrack is very inconsistent in quality. There's a few bops here and there, but much of it reminds me of Sonic 4. There's also choppy loading on the Switch, which doesn't help.
I didn't dislike the entire game, I had fun with some of the earlier levels, but overall I think this is simply a bad mark against the Hedgehog. I would have taken another Mania over this any day.

If you love or prefer the Sonic Mania/Genesis style of play this isn't that. The game is very derivative and reminiscent of previous concepts in an unflattering way. Much like the STH4 staff did phoning in the level themes if you've played the original iconic Sonic 1-3 levels you've already seen the themes for this game and unlike in Sonic Mania there are no remarkable innovations here. The level design is usually a centerpiece of the Sonic experience. This game plays more vertically in every stage and is less interested in encouraging the use of rollercoaster-like momentum as the adrenaline-inducing levels of games past have been. It seems like a better-polished Sonic 4 or Sonic Generations Act 1-style sequel than an homage to the 2D Genesis Sonic style that was marketed in the promotional materials, which I'd hoped the gameplay to emulate. The music and the new gameplay mechanics are also uninspired and forgettable.

Sonic superstars is a fun classic 2D Sonic game that doesn’t really try to hard to be all new but serviceable if you want a new mania. Recommend to play on sale because 60$ is pretty steep price for this

Not quite as good as Mania, but still a great 2D Sonic! It got a bit frustrating during the last level, but overall had a good time with it.

What can I use to describe sonic superstar? I am at a loss for words. Amazing. Graphics fun and exciting gameplay. Great use of characters. Great co-op great level design sonic superstars is a must have. If you’re a sonic fan. The only issue that I have with it are the boss battles which can use some tweaking and at times stray a little too far from the classic sonic gameplay but I live in that and amazing game that I 100% recommend.

Fun Sonic game on par with Sonic Mania. I hope SEGA keeps this art style and the side-scroller series going. It’s a great game with just some minor issues that have plagued Sonic games from the beginning. If u like classic Sonic side-scrolling games you will love this entry too. My only real gripe would be once you get some momentum going expect it to get interrupted by a random enemy or hazard or surprise death trap. I wish when you get up to speed the game would move the screen a bit more to the right of the character so you get more time to see what’s coming.
Enjoyed the bosses, a couple of em can be annoying until you memorize their patterns. Multiple-phased bosses in particular can be annoying cause you have to start over but thankfully none of them were too long and once you got the pattern down you can fly through first phase quickly.
It’s a shorter game in line with these types of titles and I think it’s about perfect. Long enough to get a satisfying end but short enough it’ll be fun to go back and play again in short bursts later.
There is a little space shooter level later in the game that was really fun, love to see them keep adding in more variety like that. There was also a cool looking 3-D pixelated world level where you occasionally shape-shift into other creatures. I hope they keep experimenting like this in future entries, those were some of the best levels.
A few minor technical hiccups while playing but nothing significant, just noticeable. In a later level you can open up big bins of coins. One of em dropped a ton of coins and the game slowed to a crawl for a few seconds. It honestly made me laugh cause it was a ridiculous amount of coins on screen at once. Later in the game there was a very prolonged load between levels to the point I thought the game crashed but I waited and it was fine. Lastly, on the final boss there was a particular swinging motion that caused repeated frame drops for whatever reason. Didn’t impact anything. Other than
