I would have loved to see this game released even in an unfinished state! The concepts Kojima and Del Toro are playing with are mind-blowing in a way that's deeply horrifying and wildly unique for both auteurs. Both the gameplay and two teasers that were released showed some of the most genuinely scary images I've ever seen in a video game. The slow-moving, tense gameplay feels familiar to those who have played Amnesia or Slender, but there is something creative and eerie about the subtle change in each loop and environment that gets under my skin. Jump scares are easy but they only utilize that once or twice in here, and the rest of the time they rely on chilling audio, disturbing imagery, and dark environments that prey on your imagination. The tension rarely lets up, as you're constantly waiting for that jarring release; however, Kojima and Del Toro patiently and continuously let the tension build, which only further adds to the level of anxiety and dread. To think that this was scrapped due to issues between Kojima and Konami is just bafflingly stupid on Konami's part. This game would have killed both financially and conceptually in the Silent Hill Universe, but at the very least I'm glad Kojima is in a much more stable and experimental place now that he can make and take time on whatever he comes up with. Unfortunately, Konami is still petty so his past projects with them are still off-limits... I will forever love this PT though and think it's a crime that others can't readily play what was released. At least we got Death Stranding out of this!
