Cursed to Golf is a retro arcade-style golfing game that is truly unique in the genre. Combining 2D platforming with golfing mechanics feels fresh and interesting. The pixel art style is excellent, and the soundtrack is solid, although I found some of the music repetitive over time.
As a casual golfing game with randomly generated levels and hazards, it was fun. I loved using the different powerups (or Ace cards/Pins) to my advantage.
However, my biggest issue with the game is, unfortunately, due to one of the game's fundamental design decisions. That is, the decision to make Cursed to Golf a 'rouge-lite'. No matter how much I tried to engage with it, the 'rouge-lite' system didn't seem to fit this game at all.
It was infuriating having to restart the run at any point. Tough boss? Restart hours of progression. Bad luck at the shop with the Ace card selection? Restart hours of progression. Now, there are a few ways the game makes future runs easier, as is usual for the genre. However, these elements weren't meaningful enough. Having to make a difficult decision to place your best Ace cards in the binder for future runs only made your current run more difficult and didn't make a meaningful difference on those future runs.
The update that introduced Pins somewhat mitigates this. However, earned Pins don't carry over to future runs and are still strongly luck-dependent. I found myself completely ignoring the Ace cards so that I could save up for the more powerful, game-breaking Pins.
Unfortunately, the biggest flaw with the 'rouge-lite' system is that it exposes the game's repetitive level-design, especially in the earlier stages of a run. Repeating the same holes, particularly in the first world, got boring quickly.
I actually recommend 'save scumming' or abusing backup-saves of some kind if you can, as this removes the frustration with the often unfair 'rouge-lite' system. With this system gone, the game is actually a much more enjoyable experience.
