Age of Empires 4 Review
great
Age of Empires 4 is an enjoyable RTS throwback that often plays it too safe, but excels when it doesn't.

Improved remake of the Timeless AOE2. More variety in strategy. Better multiplayer. Add more customizations to pre-game settings and it will be perfect!

As a beginner stepping into the RTS genre, I found it daunting. These games can be complicated for a newcomer and this one is no exception.
Aside from a few issues regarding balance, AI difficulty and less frequent updates than I would have expected; there is a lot to like about Age of Empires 4.
As a beginner playing by yourself and heading into the online PvP can be challenging. Most of the time you will run into players who have a decent understanding of what to do and I remember getting demolished over and over when I first started. Because of this, I was tempted to try playing against the AI. I found that the AI were not well described or balanced. Easy was far too easy, for example. I found myself searching outside of the game for help on how to get better.
The community around this game was, however, fantastic. From YouTubers with a wealth of knowledge and deep understanding of the game, lots of whom have a desire to guide and teach new players, to players you meet while learning online. Almost everyone I came across had something insightful to tell me when I had a question about the mechanics, how to control efficiently, etc.
Coming from a more casual perspective, I had so much fun playing with and against my friends. I spent most of my time playing this game in private lobbies with them. All of us getting better as we played. Always trying to figure out some new tactics to surprise each other with. There's a surprisingly large sandbox here for someone just looking for a more casual experience.
I would easily recommend this game and any other in this series to someone looking to take the dive into RTS games. Especially with friends.

This game has a lot going for it: the uniqueness of each civilization, combat is deeper than ever with strategies and formations, the unique way of story telling in the campaign, building bonuses…the list goes on. However, the uninspired visual identity completely ruins the experience for me.
In previous games, each unit/upgrade/building/environment is visually distinct. This game feels muddy and bland. Colours are washed and overall the graphics are lacking compared to other current gen games. Units are barely distinguishable from each other. Icons, while crisp, do not convey much information and you have to rely on reading the information panels more than you would like.
Essentially, nothing is easily discernible at a glance, and the game feels more like you’re playing Where’s Waldo.
