With the far-right National Rally winning the first round and setting its sights on an absolute majority, there’s a lot more at stake in France’s legislative election than the liberal, pro-business agenda of President Emmanuel Macron. Here’s a guide to the vote, showing how the rise of the anti-immigrant party led by Marine Le Pen is putting France’s unique political system under strain.

French national elections are held over two rounds one week apart. The vote that kicked off on Sunday — called by Macron after his party received a drubbing in European elections — will determine the makeup of the 577-member National Assembly, which is renewed every five years.
