AdChoices for the Google Display Network

Ads that appear on certain sites on the Google Display Network show ad badging icons for "AdChoices" or "Ads by Google" to provide clear choice and information to users about the ads they see. Where required, there is no choice to opt-out of ad badging icons.

"AdChoices" is an industry standard icon that expands when users move their cursor over it. When users click the icon, they go to a page hosted by Google which contains text specified by the IAB, the Ads Settings–where they can control the types of ads (for example, Arts & Entertainment or Travel) they see on the Google Display Network, and to the youronlinechoices page–a guide to online behavioral advertising and online privacy.

Note: The "AdChoices" icon should not have any effect on ad performance.

The Example of the AdChoices icon icon is 19x15 pixels when collapsed and 76x15 pixels when expanded Example of the expanded AdChoices icon. The icon appears either in the top right corner of display ads, the bottom right corner of text ads, and the bottom left corner of video ads.

Tip: The creative preview in Google Ad Manager won't always display the AdChoices ad badge. However, where required, it appears automatically when ads are served.

What buyers need to know

All text, static image, and third-party ad served ads, will have the new in-ads notice when appearing on publisher pages in the Google Display Network, except for publishers who render their own ads with JS/XML feeds.
Note: Google automatically places the notice on the top right corner of ads. However, if the new notice will cover any part of a display ad, advertisers may wish to alter their design. An adjustment of the creatives in response to the new icon in various languages may also be needed.

What publishers need to do

  • If you're using Google's iframe ad unit implementation, no action is needed.
  • If you've implemented your own ad unit with JS/XML or are using a direct iFrame, AdChoices will not show.
  • For video, when the IMA SDK is not used, video players should support rendering the VAST Icon and IconClickFallbackImage, and trigger the IconClickThrough on platforms where clickthrough can be supported (mobile, desktop). This support should be indicated on the request using the wta parameter.

Any ads shown on the Google Display Network that appear on English and EMEA language publisher pages show the in-ads icon if the publisher is using standard iFrame implementations. All partners who use the standard Google iFrame ad unit implementation serving ads in one of the supported languages start seeing an in-ads icon automatically (translated to the appropriate language).

If you see different versions of icons shown on different sites, you need to implement this change yourself.

Render the AdChoices icon for custom native ad formats

When implementing custom native ads in-app, you are responsible for rendering the AdChoices icon. It is important you take steps to render and set the click listener for the AdChoices icon when rendering the main ad assets.
