The action is set in the so-called Fallout universe, whose history has diverged from the real world since around 1950. The game world extends to the center and the surrounding area of ​​the Fallout counterpart to the US gambling metropolis Las Vegas, which was renamed New Vegas after a nuclear war in 2077 and the major nuclear catastrophe that followed. The events of the game take place in the year 2281, more than 200 years after the nuclear catastrophe and just four years after the events in Fallout 3. The wasteland of the Mojave Desert, in which the city of New Vegas is located, was destroyed in the USA's nuclear war against China was only slightly affected. This means that large areas of land have been spared from major destruction and contamination. In the game world there are therefore occasional areas with untouched vegetation and largely intact buildings.

The game mechanics differ only slightly from its unofficial predecessor, Fallout 3. To create the character, the player is given instructions at the beginning of the game by the doctor Dr. Mitchell was asked a few questions as part of the treatment. Based on the answers, the player character's appearance is determined and skills and character traits are assigned to him, for example in terms of intelligence, negotiation skills, physical strength and handling of different types of weapons. These skills can later be further improved by the player character reading books that can be found throughout the wasteland.

Compared to Fallout 3, there are slight changes in V.A.T.S. mode, in which every melee weapon can now perform a special attack. In addition, aiming via the rear sight and front sight can be switched on or off in the game options. The player now has the opportunity to modify his weapons, for example with a rifle scope or a larger magazine. Power armor is no longer indestructible, and there are now various pieces of armor and clothing that each belong to a specific faction and have corresponding effects on the behavior of NPCs when worn.

New Vegas doesn't change anything about the combat system. The combat system from Fallout 3 remains untouched in Fallout: New Vegas; in addition to the real-time shootings, there is also the pauseable V.A.T.S., in which you can calmly plan the next shot or blow.

Die Geschehnisse des Spieles finden im Jahre 2281 statt, also mehr als 200 Jahre nach der nuklearen Katastrophe und nur vier Jahre nach den Geschehnissen in Fallout 3. Das Ödland der Mojave-Wüste, in der die Stadt New Vegas liegt, wurde im Atomkrieg der USA gegen China nur wenig in Mitleidenschaft gezogen. So sind weite Landstriche von größeren Zerstörungen und Verseuchungen verschont geblieben. In der Spielwelt finden sich deshalb vereinzelt auch Gebiete mit einer unberührten Vegetation und weitgehend intakten Gebäuden.

Die Spielmechanik unterscheidet sich nur geringfügig vom inoffiziellen Vorgänger Fallout 3. Zur Charaktererstellung werden dem Spieler zu Beginn des Spiels vom Arzt Dr. Mitchell im Rahmen der Behandlung einige Fragen gestellt. Auf der Grundlage der Antworten wird das Aussehen des Spielcharakters bestimmt und ihm Fähigkeiten und Charaktereigenschaften zugeordnet, beispielsweise in Bezug auf Intelligenz, Verhandlungsgeschick, Körperkraft und Umgang mit verschiedenen Waffentypen. Diese Fähigkeiten können später weiter verbessert werden, indem der Spielcharakter Bücher liest, die überall im Ödland verteilt zu finden sind.

Im Vergleich zu Fallout 3 gibt es leichte Veränderungen im V.A.T.S.-Modus, in dem nun jede Nahkampfwaffe einen Spezialangriff ausführen kann. Zudem kann in den Spieloptionen das Zielen über Kimme und Korn ein- oder ausgeschaltet werden. Der Spieler hat nun die Möglichkeit, seine Waffen zu modifizieren, etwa mit einem Zielfernrohr oder einem größeren Magazin. Powerrüstungen sind nicht mehr unzerstörbar, zudem gibt es nun verschiedene Rüstungen und Kleidungen, welche jeweils einer bestimmten Fraktion angehören und beim Tragen entsprechende Auswirkungen auf das Verhalten von NPCs haben.

New Vegas ändert nichts am Kampfsystem. Das Kampfsystem aus Fallout 3 bleibt in Fallout: New Vegas unangetastet, wieder gibt es neben den Echtzeit-Schießereien das pausierbare V.A.T.S., in dem Sie in Ruhe den nächsten Schuss oder Schlag planen.

Recently replayed this after more than a decade or so - and properly too! Did a full walkthrough, side quests, DLCs and all, with a few mods that enhanced the overall vanilla experience. The lobotomite returned!

What a world - even though I understand that nostalgia plays a heavy role in this, New Vegas is (at least for me) one of the most memorable experiences in video games. Playing this as young boy, there was so much that got by me, and I think that just made me appreciate it even more this time. By the end, I got hit with this feeling that, maybe, I'll never play this again. At least not in the same way, with the same wanderlust.

You get a full, rich, western flavored wasteland with memorable characters, strange places and bizarre moments. You also have a bunch of options to make your character unique and the choices you make impact the world and what comes after. A staple for RPGs, really.
