"The Eye of the Beholder" is a short story published in the Stories of Jedi and Sith short-story collection. The story was written by Sarwat Chadda, illustrated by Jake Bartok, and published on June 7, 2022. The story featured Anakin Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi.

Plot summary[]

Zohra and her younger brother Dumuz hide in their family's apartment on Devalok as the gardens of their homeworld burn. Despite Devalok having no strategic value, the Clone Wars have come, as Separatist attacks lay waste to the world. Dumuz asks Zohra when their parents are coming back, but Zohra has no answers. Desperate to keep him quiet so battle droids don't find them, she begins telling him the story of Jedi Master Uma Kalidi, a hero to Devalok.

But a patrol of battle droids arrives, seeking to eliminate any survivors in the area, and the two children rush to hide in an air duct. The droids destroy the last of the food and water in the apartment, before discovering Zohra and Dumuz, dragging them out into the floor. The children are designated "dangerous rebels" as the droids take aim, but before death can be dispensed, rescue arrives in the form of two Jedi who destroy the patrol. Anakin Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi ask the children why they are alone, and Zohra explains that their parents went on a supply run five days ago and never returned. It is likely their parents are dead, but Kenobi and Skywalker, escorting the children towards the Amrit spaceport for evacuation, decide it is worth stopping at the Enki greenhouse, where Zohra's parents were going.

In the ruins of the greenhouse, Anakin finds a huluppu fruit, despite it being out of season, and offers the seed to Dumuz so he can start a new garden. A further search reveals that Zohra and Dumuz's parents still live, trapped inside the ruins, and the Jedi free them. The group is attacked by another droid patrol, but the two Jedi destroy the initial wave, and an LAAT gunship arrives to bear them away. The gunship, however, also falls under attack, and after ensuring Zohra's family is safe, Anakin and Obi-Wan leave to deal with the new attackers.

Later, on a refugee ship to Naboo, as her parents sleep, Zohra tells Dumuz that they can use the huluppu seed to start a new garden. She begins telling him a new story, this one about Anakin and Obi-Wan.
