Clone troopers form a shield wall out of their M3 Bulwark Blast Shields to repel Separatist fire
During the Clone Wars, the clone riot troopers of the Coruscant Guard used riot shields in conjunction with a baton.[1] Another type of shield used by the Grand Army of the Republic was the M3 Bulwark Blast Shield, which was used by clone troopers of the 501st Legion and Doom's unit during the Battle of Ringo Vinda. The shield was made of a blaster-proof material. It was strong enough to withstand and deflect strong sustained hits from blaster fire, but was also light enough to be used in conjunction with a DC-15A blaster carbine.[2] The Wookiee warriors of Kashyyyk used wooden battle shields that had a reverse teardrop shape.[3]
After the rise of the Galactic Empire, the riot gear used by the stormtroopers of the Empire also included a shield.[4] Furthermore, patrol troopers and a variant of scout trooper known as the Shield Troopers could be equipped with shields.[5]
Maz Kanata's collection of antique items included a shield fashioned of an unknown silvery metal.[6] The Kyuzo warriors wore helmets that doubled as shields and as missiles.[7] Shields were also used by First Order riot control troopers as protection against crowds[8] or in combat. A member of Kylo Ren's division, riot trooper FN-2199 took part in the Battle of Takodana, during which he wielded his shield alongside his F-11D blaster rifle. Upon seeing stormtrooper defector Finn, however, FN-2199 threw down both his blaster and shield to directly battle Finn with his Z6 riot control baton.[9]
