This article is about the Jedi Master. You may be looking for the Quarry penal colony or other uses of Roland.

"Mann was trained by Jedi Master Quarry and was known as one of the three firebrands along with his peers Avar Kriss and Stellan Gios."
―Harli Cogra, Chronicles of the Jedi[2]

Roland Quarry was a Jedi Master who trained Elzar Mann as their Padawan during the High Republic Era. They gave Mann and his Padawan friends Avar Kriss and Stellan Gios the nickname "the three firebrands." Long after training with Quarry and even after becoming a Jedi Master, Mann continued to remember and believe in Quarry's teachings.

Biography[]

"I told you Elzar and I go back a long way. We had different Masters, but we were taught in many of the same ways, especially when it comes to looking after our equipment."
―Stellan Gios, to Bell Zettifar[1]

Roland Quarry[3] was a Jedi Master of the Jedi Order during the High Republic Era who trained the human Elzar Mann as their Padawan. Before Mann and his close friends, fellow Padawans Avar Kriss and Stellan Gios, achieved Knighthood, Quarry often referred to them as "the three firebrands."[1] The three regularly undertook missions and trained together despite having different Masters.[2] Quarry taught similarly to Gios's Master, Rana Kant, and both stressed looking after one's equipment.[1]

Mann had great trust in Quarry. On at least one occasion, Quarry and Mann performed an act in which they used the Force to meld their minds and share each other's thoughts and memories.[1] In 231 BBY,[4] many years after his training with Quarry ended, Mann—who had become a Jedi Master—recalled the act and his trust in his old Master before performing the same act with Force-sensitive monster hunter Ty Yorrick.[1] That year,[4] Gios, who had also become a Jedi Master, told Padawan Bell Zettifar about Kant and Quarry's similarities and that both he and Mann had been inspired by their Masters' insistence on taking care of their equipment to use muttamok oil on their lightsabers.[1]

Mann believed in Quarry's teachings and saw them as good and true, with the former remembering them especially when he was attempting to recenter himself on the planet Ledalau[3] in 230 BBY[5] after developing an unwanted dependence on using the dark side of the Force.[3] Quarry was mentioned in the fourth chapter of Chronicles of the Jedi, a document written by Jedi Master Harli Cogra[2] in 229 BBY.[6]

Personality and traits[]

Elzar Mann believed that what Roland Quarry had taught him was valuable and true, and Stellan Gios believed that Quarry and Rana Kant taught similarly.[1]

Powers and abilities[]

A member of the Jedi Order, Quarry could wield the Force. They had the ability connect their mind with another's and share thoughts and feelings with them by using the Force.[1]

Behind the scenes[]

Roland Quarry was created for the Star Wars: The High Republic multimedia project's[1] Phase I.[7] The character was first indirectly mentioned as Elzar Mann's Master in a preview for the guidebook Star Wars: The Lightsaber Collection published on StarWars.com on September 23, 2020, prior to the book's release on October 20 that year.[8] The character's last name was revealed in the 2021 novel The Rising Storm, written by Cavan Scott,[1] while the 2022 novel The Fallen Star, written by Claudia Gray, later introduced their first name.[3]

  6. Star Wars: The High Republic: Chronicles of the Jedi establishes that the in-universe book Chronicles of the Jedi was written weeks after the destruction of Starlight Beacon, which Star Wars: The High Republic Character Encyclopedia dates to 230 BBY. The issuing of the Guardian Protocols, dated by The High Republic Character Encyclopedia to 229 BBY, are depicted in The High Republic: Shadows of Starlight 1 as taking place one week after Starlight Beacon's destruction. With this, Chronicles of the Jedi must have been authored no earlier than 229 BBY. Chronicles of the Jedi further establishes that Pra-Tre Veter is still a Grand Master of the Jedi Order, meaning it was written before his death, which The High Republic Character Encyclopedia states took place in 229 BBY. Therefore, Chronicles of the Jedi must have been written in 229 BBY.
