"Hold out your hand, Wookiee. Describe what you see your saber to be. [...] No, no, no, not what you imagine but what you feel in your hand. Concentrate. What will make you strong in battle and humble in retreat? What connects with your Force? [...] Ah, yes, wood. Not a common choice. And only wood from the brylark tree is as strong as metal."
―Huyang, to Gungi about his lightsaber[2]

Gungi's lightsaber was the personal lightsaber of the Wookiee Jedi Padawan Gungi. The weapon was constructed out of the wood from a Brylark tree and emitted a green blade. It was built aboard the Paladin-class corvette Crucible in the year 20 BBY.

The weapon was present during the rescue of Padawan Ahsoka Tano on Florrum, and the invasion of Florrum that followed it. It was later present during the duel at the Jedi Temple between Jedi Knight Anakin Skywalker and the rogue Jedi Barriss Offee.

History[]

Construction[]

Gungi would construct his lightsaber on the Crucible during the Clone Wars.

Around twenty years before the Battle of Yavin, the Wookiee Jedi youngling Gungi was sent with a group of fellow younglings to the planet Ilum in order to participate in the Gathering, a Jedi ritual where the youngling would retrieve a kyber crystal to power his or her lightsaber. Gungi traveled to Ilum on board the Crucible alongside his fellow younglings and Padawan Ahsoka Tano, who was their guide for the experience. Upon touching down, Gungi and the other younglings traveled to the Crystal Cave, where they and Ahsoka met with Grand Master Yoda for the beginnings of the trial.[4]

Yoda explained that the younglings would have to travel deep into the caverns of the cave to retrieve the crystal meant for them, and if they didn't make it back before the exit froze over they would most likely die. The younglings hastily traveled into the cave and split up to find their crystals. Gungi was able to find his crystal rather quickly, but it was located across a sea of icy water which could only be crossed once the water froze over. Eventually Gungi was able to cross the stream and obtain his crystal, escaping the Crystal Cave with little time to spare. When the other younglings also made it out, the group traveled back to the Crucible with Ahsoka to build their lightsabers.[4]

After leaving Ilum's atmosphere, Gungi and the other younglings were greeted by Huyang, a droid who had instructed Jedi for millennia on how to construct their lightsabers. Huyang told Gungi to reach his hand out and feel through the Force what his lightsaber should look like. After a moment's thought Gungi described his saber as being made of wood. Huyang gave Gungi a wood hilt from a Brylark tree, which he then used to begin constructing his lightsaber. Before he could finish, the Crucible came under attack by the Ohnaka Gang, a band of ruthless pirates led by the infamous Hondo Ohnaka.[2]

After several altercations with the pirates, the younglings and Ahsoka were able to drive them off their ship, but Ahsoka was captured by the gang and taken to their stronghold on Florrum.[2]

Usage during the Clone Wars[]

After the attack, the younglings contacted Master Kenobi and told him what had happened. He instructed the younglings to stay put until he could assist them and Ahsoka. While waiting for Master Kenobi's arrival, Gungi finished building his lightsaber, alongside fellow younglings Petro and Byph.[1]

During the last year of the Clone Wars, Gungi was present for a lightsaber training exercise instructed by Jedi Master Tera Sinube in the Jedi Temple on Coruscant. As he and his fellow younglings trained with their lightsabers, Petro noticed a lightsaber duel occurring between Jedi Knight Anakin Skywalker and the rogue Jedi Barriss Offee. Gungi and the others watched as Skywalker defeated and captured Offee, bringing her to justice.[5]

Usage during the Imperial Era[]

Gungi continued to use his lightsaber after attaining the rank of Padawan[6] and surviving the Great Jedi Purge into the Imperial Era. Sometime after the fall of Tipoca City, Gungi was captured by the droids of the Vanguard Axis and taken prisoner on board their space station. He was kept there while the Axis arranged for him to be sold alive to a wealthy buyer, with their leader keeping Gungi's lightsaber on him at all times. While the Axis leader negotiated with Clone Force 99, a commando squad of genetically defective clones, over a purchase of forged chain codes, Gungi escaped his cell and was aided in his escape by clone squad member Omega. After the rest of the Axis droids and Clone Force 99 got involved, Gungi seized the opportunity to reclaim his lightsaber with the Force while the Axis leader was distracted.[7]

After escaping the station with the rescued Wookiee aboard Omicron-class attack shuttle the Marauder, Clone Force 99 returned Gungi to his home planet of Kashyyyk. Upon arriving, the team discovered a Wookiee village burning as Trandoshans held one of its warriors captive. Enraged, Gungi activated his lightsaber and rushed to the hunters to free his fellow Wookiee. He managed to free him from his handcuffs, but the remaining hunters turned against him with a pair of Incinerator tanks. The Bad Batch joined Gungi and with his help took down the tanks. Gungi was invited by the Wookiee he rescued to their own village, introducing him to the village elder, Yanna.[7]

Meanwhile, the Trandoshans and a group of stormtrooper clones, led by Babwa Venomor, discovered the remains of his fellow hunters' tanks and realizing that they had been destroyed by use of a lightsaber, he ordered his hunters to raze the jungle to its roots and find the one responsible. The Wookiee tribe consulted the Wroshyr trees for a plan of counter-attack, devising one to lure the invading Trandoshans into the nearby netcaster nests, where the infuriated netcasters attacked the Trandoshans in respose to their tanks destroying their nests. Venomor, however, ran away into the jungle following Gungi into another clearing further from the netcaster nests which he set on fire to trap the Wookiee. Gungi was however able to distract the hunter, causing him to surround himself with a ring of fire; trapped in a close-quarters fight Venomor's flamethrower was sliced by Gungi's saber, leaving him vulnerable to netcasters who descended from the tress, wrapped him in their webs and carried him to the treetops where he was killed.[7]
