A downloadable game for Windows, macOS, Linux, and Android

A game by Sedge;
With concept, character, and background art by Nik Rouz;
And music by Gator TotsEymon, and Hop-Skip & The Chewtoys .

Anything can begin, and end, at a moment's notice...

You're a young adult yuuman, living in a futuristic America in the late 22nd century. Though you had a life, dreams, and aspirations once, it all got swept away once you were diagnosed with incurable late-stage brain cancer; now you're stuck in a hospital, living the last few weeks of your life in existential agony, incapable of processing what you did wrong to deserve this fate.

Everything changes when, one day, you're approached by a scientist from the world's largest mega-corporation, who offers you a chance to escape your dying body and have your mind transplanted onto an android synth vessel; the only catch being, nobody knows whether the process works or not, whether you'll survive the transition or ultimately perish. With little holding you back, you eventually accept...

...You awaken in your new body, feeling quite different from how you were before. Nobody can tell whether it's truly you inside the machine, or an AI pretending, believing that it's you.

Not even you.

In a world where technology's constantly evolving, advanced AIs are viewed with fear and suspicion and few things are certain, you have to rebuild your old life from scratch, convince those who abandoned you on your deathbed that you're still here, and ultimately figure out whether you truly are who you claim to be.

About the game:

NMF is a linear Sci-Fi Visual Novel: explore a high-tech futuristic world as an android, meet all sorts of new people and reconnect with some old faces, find the truth behind your existence and your purpose in this new world.

The game addresses heavy topics such as death, suicide, depression, anxiety, and existential dread. If you are suffering from depression or are easily overwhelmed by these topics, I advise you to exercise caution when reading the contents of this VN or refrain from playing altogether.

The game is entirely SFW, though there are some adult non-explicit jokes thrown in for comedic effect. There aren't, nor will there ever be, any explicit scenes or suggestive content in this VN.
There are fight scenes in the novel that feature non-graphic depictions of violence.

Updates will be irregular, but regular progress reports will be made through Devlogs here on Itch, through my Twitter, and lastly through my public Discord server. You can also check out my Patreon and especially my Ko-Fi! Every donation helps a lot, so please consider donating if you can! ^w^

I've been having issues with the Discord server, it won't let me react to the message in the Rules channel so I can't see any of the rest of the channels. I've tried marking the rules as unread and then rereading them, I've tried marking the greek check as a favorite reaction to see if it'll appear, I've tried viewing reactions and tapping the green check there, I've even tried leaving the entire server and rejoining, but nothing has been working. I have no idea what's going on TwT

any progress on the next build?

Working on it! If you're looking for updates, consider joining the Discord server. I'm more active there than anywhere else.

Not to be a pest, but I can't verify my phone number because I don't have a phone..... Do you have any idea on a possible timeframe when the next build is going to be released?

Probably next month, but right now we're not prioritizing getting new builds out. I'm trying to get my degree out of the way, so that takes priority. Updates will come out as I find time to work on the game. If you want to know when the next build drops as soon as it's out (or whenever we next make an announcement), just follow my account! ^w^

With how much it is mentioned that Pandora almost runs the world, how much does the CEO of Pandora makes a year? And what is the net worth of the majority owner?

(+2)

There's something I myself find refuge in via the themes of this game. Leaving your past self behind, only for practically the whole world to look at you differently. Not to mention it, but, the slight amount of character customisation at the start drives this point home even further.

But, that whole relation aside, this is still one of the best VNs I have read in my short yet voluminous time doing so. The art; story; characters; hell, EVERYTHING about this game; It's all amazing. If there was a world where you could rate things six stars, I'd ask for another

tl;dr, This is peak

Agreed. At least for me, I start questioning my reality, lol.

(1 edit)

The music is really good and catchy. The art is great and unique. The story is great...but there's so much suspicion that Issac has of his new "acquaintances" that can be answered as innocent intentions, such as the recording of his actions kinda are necessary for legal safety and data collection.

One thing that is needed is when you get to a new chapter, it says so and how many chapters there are. I'm getting kinda anxious as I'm only three images away from having them all in the gallery and I have no idea how much more is left. I don't want it to end!!

The biggest thing that bothers me in the story is that you can't defend yourself in his world without being thrown in jail! Btw what species was Issac before he became a synthetic?

(+1)

*Not me whos going to explode when the creator gets the time to update this again*

you did a wonderful job making this story, I wish you well in life (:

(1 edit)

Great book, great characters, great story! I had always thought about how amazing this kind of tech would be but I had never thought about what growing pains it might have.

Honestly an amazing story and good dialogue, for a normal person it's a 10/10. I just got nit picky and hung up on the specifics, i.e. I ruined my own experience lol.

(+3)

The prolog is too long and didactic, and I lost patience. I feel like it'd be nicer if it's not that didactic. Like, perhaps all those philosophical description can wait for after I leave the hospital bed?

(1 edit) (+1)

I need the ost for this game it's such a vibe

The osts are saved in your nmf folder then game then audio. No problem.

Minor spoiler warning

*Isaac's dad's name is revealed to be Abraham Asimov, which in turn reveals Isaac's full name to be Isaac Asimov*

My reaction: "A surprise, to be sure, but a welcome one"

meme reactions aside, in hindsight though, I feel like I should've seen it coming.

Where is it shown? I played through the full game but don’t remember seeing that?

In chapter 12, when Isaac and Mary are talking about their families while they are having dinner at Isaac's apartment.

What's the importance of this? Is that something that changes the story somehow or what?

Did you read the spoiler?

(+2)

This game is in my top 10 best games (if you can even call it a game lol).

(+2)

Fantastic story! I've fallen in love with each and every character, they're all so well written. The setting is really interesting and though out. Made me cry a lot... I'll be thinking about this for a long time.

when does the next build come out? i obviously dont expect an exact timeframe just curious to see if you have an estimate

(+4)

I shared this on the Discord, but we'll be going on hiatus for a few months at least. I'm falling a bit behind on my Uni exams, and I have to prioritize those over the project. We'll still be working on new content, but not as quickly as I'd like. The Patreon's currently paused as well.

Oh! ok well thats definetly a good reason for a break!! hope everything is going well at uni! :p

I'm so excited too see more of this!!

(+1)

wonderful build as always, keep up the good work!

Awesome game.

(+2)

love all the little references in here, mary shelly, max stirner etc. a delightful project, with really cute art. and existential dread. :)

(+3)

Not gonna lie, love this story. I loved it so much that I based the design and name of one of my ocs off of it, then realized how similar it was and changed the design and name. BUT THE CORE IS STILL THERE BECAUSE OF HOW GOOD THIS IS.

Honestly this is one of the best novels I've read. Even tho this novel has some fantasy elements it steel feels realistic and believable, emotional and gripping. Isaac is very relatable, the pain he feels hits so close to home and honestly I cried a little while reading... Also the characters are, something else, I've never seen such clever 4D chess mind games, they confuse not only Isaac, but me as well. The art and music is very charming and beautiful too.

Wish I could volunteer for synth testing program as well ngl...

(1 edit) (+3)

I just tried out the game, by curiosity, but I ended up almost playing through all chapters in one session. (Of course, I didn't just speedrun the game...)

I didn't get to play it until now, probably scared off by the heavy topics warning, and having a lot on my mind lately.

However, I think this heavy topics warning is kind of insignifiant in the game. I'm not saying the warning isn't needed through...

I honestly got flabbergasted by this VN, in more ways than I can probably figure out. Sure, there isn't any paths/choices in it, compared to every other VN I played. But seriously... The ambiance, the backgrounds, the music, the characters...

WARNING Spoilers ahead

Most importantly: The combat scenes !!! They're just so unique and epic.

I love every details of this VN and can't wait for the next chapter !

I'm curious about why you say that? I'm still kinda looking out for that suicide topic... Not that I want Isaac to do that, but I think I might be getting closer to such a buildup while reading this story. Also I can't believe the world he lives in where you can't even defend yourself from others without going to jail....

(1 edit) (+2)

I liked this game, and now I've got toasters on the brain. Thanks for making what you have, and I'll be keeping an eye on this for future content!

Spoiler-y, so gonna pad some space here. Play the game first, nerd.

I take the Newton's Flaming Laser Sword approach when it comes to abstracts like yuumanity, but I still enjoyed the back and forth between the characters in the story about trying to break down what it is and all the new things I learned about them as the story went on! Great job with that.

The concept of after-story content was something I never considered! It's a great idea! I enjoyed the little side things in there almost more than I did with our toasty friend.

... Now, if I were a toaster told not to make a scene that one time, I think I'd take the nearest willing pink and purple participant, have them spread their arms out on each side, and give them a piggyback ride while making airplane noises all over the aisles. Consequences be darned.

5/5 crunchy and good with butter

(+6)

i have never played such an emotionally gripping visual novel since maybe adastra. would recommend but be warned for an existential crisis

(+2)

Agreed

cant wait for the next bit

Hello, Sedge, how come I can't access the discord channel for NMF anymore?

(+2)

what kind of yumuan was issac pre transiton?

(+6)

It was never specified, I think the author has said a while ago that they wanted to keep it ambiguous

(+1)

oh, alright, thank you!

(1 edit) (+1)

This was wayyyyy worth the wait everything from the story to the ending is awesome and kind of mind blowing.

Props to the no more future team

Does the Ren’Py embedded in the PC build is same as Ren’Py embedded in the Android APK file? Since I can’t load my saves from Android to PC, it throws an error about module not found, assuming the APK file uses old version of Ren’Py that has the module while the PC does not have the module because of the new Ren’Py version.

Honestly, I've no idea! It might be the case, I have a friend compile the android builds for me and our Renpy versions might not coincide. If you're having trouble loading old saves, try using the Chapter Select feature! Just start a new game, answer "no" to the prompt, then resume browsing from whichever chapter you left off at. ^w^

Oh, I didn’t know that until now. Thanks.

(+1)

you should read this for hot max stirner alone, sorry but i don't make the rules that's just how it is

Does Isaac have borderline personality disorder? 🤔 Coz I see more of myself in him with each update 😅

(+5)

It's always a good day when NMF gets a new build

pretty sure theres a typo here i think it should say 'No More Father'

(+6)

build 16 is absolutely insane. from a mad concentration of some of the best art i have seen, to a soundtrack that goes hard and the best dramatic thread yet. it's hard to believe that this is not only free, but exists to begin with. i cannot express how much of a credit to the format this is.

just ran build 16 and i crashed when trying start a new game here's the crash log

```
checked my older version on steam, worked just fine, it seems to be an issue with build 16
i even wiped ALL my save files and it still isnt working.
okay so i found the fuck up. after looking though the logs, files, etc. you changed the name of "bg bloomburg fountain.webp" in the older versions, splitting them into "bg bloomburg fountain day.webp" and "bg bloomburg fountain evening.webp" but you forgot to update the code from before.
thats what it seems like at least.
Has it been fixed yet?
(+1)
steam version seems to be working at least
Yes, it's been fixed. Just download the game again (from either Itch or Steam) and it'll work just fine.
Just play it on Steam.
(+3)
I had this game for a while then forgot about it. Really good stuff!
(+7)
I just got through the prologue and woah I really love this vn! I might be overanalyzing but this might be a not so subtle allegory for gender affirming surgery for trans people on a narrative about self-identity, consciousness, ai, and the philosophical debate of what makes you really you. If this was the intention of the writer then this vn freaking rules! Regardless the writing is great and the story is intriguing, will continue reading more :DD
(+5)
Really enjoyed this so far, looking forward to seeing how it continues. Great story and characters, and the art is very good.
(+3)
Imma see if this works on a mid 2000 smartphone
(+1)
I love this story so far but still donno about one thing...
Why is LGBT tag here? I mean, thats how ive found this VN, but i didnt see anything... related as well. Asking just out of curiosity, it doesnt affect my impression of this game >,>
(+3)
Depending on the first few (and only) choices in the game, you can either keep the MC's given name, or change it to one of your (their) liking, along with choosing their preferred pronouns. If you do decide to alter their identity, the game remembers this, and certain characters will interact with the MC a little differently depending on their choice. Some readers feel as though this is a metaphor for trans people and trans self-expression (whether it remains a metaphor or is further expanded upon later in the story is yet to be seen), so I added the tag to account for them. Other than that, depending on the MC's chosen pronouns, certain characters' infatuation with them can be seen as very, very softcore LGBT romance, though that is not the novel's main focus. I do admit that the LGBT themes are a lot less important to the plot than in most other FVNs, but I still think the tagging is appropriate for the reasons outlined above.
(+2)
Huh... i thought about it but wanted to confirm. Good idea x3
(Romance with Nem would be a dream come true, not gonna lie)
