i think i softlocked myself.. i have jump height 4 and double jump, one pixel short of making it back up (does the screenshot appear? im on the very left map edge on the 'surface')

Oh, you managed to make it there without collecting the wall jump? Interesting... yeah I'll be sure to put long vertical tunnels to the surface in the full version lol. Gonna update this in a lil while

yes i got the double jump after 2 jump ups for a total max jump height of 8 and went to explore, after i got stuck i hex edited the save (merged two saves, really) to get unstuck cause i wanted to see the rest of the game, i should still have a copy if you wanna see, thank god for no integrity check :p

The art style gave this some interesting restrictions to work around as you couldn't signify areas where future abilities would be used with different floor/wall textures.

It did restrict the abilities to merely extra jump heights and dashing, but they were movement oriented in a game where moving felt good (though I had some issues moving at the beginning, they seemed to iron themself out).

Presenting the game with a wide zoomed out view was good too, as active gameplay still functioned as viewing your typical MV map without having to pause constantly.

The fog of war was a nice touch for keeping the exploration a mystery with the camera scope, but even within rooms themselves you had no idea of their enormity such as the big room towards the end with the single pixel platforms hovering around.

This all came together excellently.

omg this is sooo cool. Loved it

i think i finished the game? i loved it! i liked exploring every crevice of the game.  very fun !

btw what is this?

oh lol i didnt finish the game until after. got all 8 buttons and 12 collectibles !

I'm so glad you had fun! The "ball with teeth" is an in-game marker of the secret buttons. One pixel lights up for each one you press. I'll definitely have to make it clearer in the full version.

Holy heck this game is so cool! I don't tend to like metroidvania style games because I struggle avoiding things like spikes or enemies, and so it makes them stressful. I really love how this is focused on exploring, and even though I found a way outta the map and died, it was mostly just funny because... "blind spots".

That said, I found the concept super cool, and I love the exploration aspect, and enjoyed finding different ways I could do extra movement as I went. The jumps all felt both challenging but forgiving, and every time I ended up in a spot going "oh no, did I fall and now I'm stuck down here forever?" I found more ways I could jump or found an extra path or ledge so I could keep going.

It was a fantastic experience, and the game feels incredibly well-tuned and polished!

WOW, thank you so much! I never expected that anyone could think more of this game than "Huh, interesting concept". Well, I'll try extra hard to make the full version just as good then!

I finished mapping the whole space and then spent a very long time trying to "explore" all of the title space, and then later that day went "man... I want more levels of this" so, I'm absolutely looking forward to the full version release! Great job with it so far =D

Your use of "Fog of War" really elevates the game. My only complaint is getting stuck while trying to go down holes that look the same size as the player. It almost feels like there is sub-pixel movement.

(+1)

Hah, there actually is sub-pixel movement. The character collision shape is actually a small triangle (to help with jumping up 1-block gaps) - maybe I could make it a pentagon to help with falling down too, I haven't thought of that.

Tremendous! I did the same thing as ^densch, but otherwise I really enjoyed the game. I do wish power ups where communicated more obviously. It wasn't always clear what power up you had picked up.

Thanks for the feedback! I had different jingles play depending on the type of powerup, but I'm thinking now I could also have a different direction of particles, or maybe have them show a sign like the buttons do.

super unique
making me feel really bad about my entry lol

(+2)

lmao don't worry about it, I'm thinking the same about my entry in comparison to others. You always do, unless you're a lil bitch and think you're the best.

And also: you'll become better. There's a reason I keep my old games on itch, just have a look at those piles of garbage

(+1)

oh great, accidentally went of the edge of the screen which is the games end. had zero indication.
only got 7/8 buttons and 10/12 powerups because of it :-(

(+2)

Interesting point. You can always refresh and be back at your last save point (before falling down), but I'll make sure to make the ending more obvious in the full version, thanks for suggesting that.

I see. replayed from the savepoint and got the final upgrade and buttns, even though I have zero clue what the last 2 upgrades even did. sicne I still am at quadruple jump and wall jump, so maybe it was just jump height

(1 edit) (+2)

Ye some of them are just jump height and movement speed so not really noticeable. I'll definitely have the upgrades more spread out in the full version so you "enjoy" them more, and as someone else suggested, have clearer signs on what each powerup does.

(+1)

very good

I got stuck in this area. I fully explored it, and I have a double jump and a pretty high jump. There doesn't seem to be any way out. Is there an upgrade I'm missing? Or one I don't know how to use?

Sadly, I think you need to reset whenever you enter that area.

(1 edit) (+2)

Ohhh... I see what I did wrong. There's a button on top of the "face" that unlocks a door to an upgrade that lets you get out. I myself forgot it was there, which says a lot about the readability of this room. Sorry!

Updated to hopefully make the button more visible and make it get pushed slightly faster.

This was really fun! Got 2/8 secret buttons and 6/12 pickups.
