《绿野仙踪》序

	序一
	人也而有「冷于冰」名何也？緣人藐焉中處，參乎兩儀，為萬物靈。顧乃慌亂迷惑，忘其所始，喪其所歸，至不得與無情木石，有知鹿豕，守貞葆和，終其天年者，總由一「熱」字擺脫不出耳！熱者一念，分為千岐萬徑，如恒河沙數，不可紀極，而緣其督者：氣也，財也，色也。酒之為害，尚在三者之末。
	蓋氣者人所生，財者生所養，色則人與生，相續於無窮者也，何害？曰：害在於氣熱則嗔，財熱則貪，色熱則淫，至於嗔、貪、淫，則必慌亂迷惑，忘其所始，喪其所歸，求能守貞葆和，至一之性者，其詣有幾？
	如，此書中，人之有朱支魁也，賊之有師尚詔也，妓女之有金鐘兒也，物之有妖蝎也，狐之有賽飛瓊也，魚之有廣信夫人也。為嗔、為貪、為淫，各守其一，以極其除，無論舉世，視同秦越，即父子兄弟夫妻，至掉臂而不相顧，何者？一熱則無不冷矣。
	然則何以執熱？三家村中學究，讀缘《綠野仙踪》，見冷于冰名，猶然慕之曰：道在是矣！彼烏知之？夫天下之大冷人，即天下之太熱人也，自來神聖賢人，皆具一片熱腸，然曰「淡」，曰「無欲」，又曰「欲立立人，欲達達人」；淡然無欲者，冷也；欲立欲達者，熱也。然則神聖賢人，其無酒色財氣乎？曰非也。夫神聖賢人，一喜一怒，必與俗並用，然皆因其人其事斟酌身分下筆，究非僕隸輿毫，略識幾字者，所能盡解讀者也。至言行文之妙，真是百法俱備，必須留神省察，始能驗其通部旨歸。
	試觀其起伏也，如餼際神龍；其交割也，如驚弦脫兔；其緊滯也，如鼓聲爆豆；其散去也，如長空風雨；其艷麗也，如美女簪花；其冷淡也，如孤猿嘯月；其收結也，如群玉歸筍；其插串也，如千珠貫線。而其立局命意，遣字措詞，無不曲盡情理，又豈破空搗虛輩所能比擬萬一。使余日夜把玩，自蕩心怡，不由一心歎賞為說部中極大山水也。
	世之讀說部者，動曰：「謊耳，謬耳！」彼所謊者，固謊矣；彼所謂真者，果能盡書而讀之否？左邱明即千秋謊祖也，而古今之讀左邱明文字者，方且童而習之，至齒搖鬟秃而不已；其不已者，為其文字謊到家也。夫文至於謊到家，亦不可不讀矣！願善讀說部者，宜疾取《水滸》、《金瓶梅》、《綠野仙蹤》，三書讀之，彼家謊到家之文字也。謂之為大山大水大觀書，不亦宜乎？
