While they can easily be mistaken for zombies, Feral Ghouls are actually horribly irradiated humans whose brains have rotted away, causing madness.Fallout 4 loading screen

Feral Ghouls are creatures found in the Commonwealth, on the Island and in Nuka-World in Fallout 4.

Background

Also referred to as mindless zombies, ghoul crazies, ferals, and feral necrotic post-humans, prejudice against non-feral ghouls by Humans is due to the widespread assumption that a feral state is the inevitable condition of every ghoul.[1] Feral ghouls are irradiated human beings that have experienced brain degeneration.[2][3] Feral ghouls have no body heat and emit lethal levels of radiation.[4]

According to Three Dog and Diamond City security, ghouls prefer dark areas, often underground or under the cover of the night sky.[5][6] Feral ghouls screech when enemies are nearby, and attack using their hands. Some feral ghouls, such as those in Camp Searchlight, utilize weapons. They usually do not attack non-feral ghouls and may flee combat.[7] Wearing a Ghoul mask will fool feral ghouls, making them remain non-hostile.

Gameplay

Ghouls can be dismembered and will continue to chase and bite the Sole Survivor even if they lose both of their arms. When losing a leg, however, they will become docile and will no longer try to attack. Rarely, a feral ghoul will still attack after its head is decapitated. Feral ghouls being exposed to high levels of radiation such as those present in the Glowing Sea will rapidly regenerate HP.

Once the player character gets close enough or they are otherwise alerted, they get up and attack. These ghouls can sometimes be targeted in V.A.T.S. and if spotted, attacked before they arise. They also show up as living actors on the HUD if the Sole Survivor is wearing power armor with a targeting HUD-equipped helmet or aims at them with any kind of recon scope.

Occasionally, they will start to run faster at the player moving erratically to dodge incoming attacks, and will eventually lunge at their attacker once they're close enough. A gurgling roar is heard when a ghoul charges at the Sole Survivor. In some locations, particularly indoors, ghouls will also emerge from windows, ductwork, etc., to attack when a victim comes close.

Ghouls hiding in this sort of ambush cannot be detected even by V.A.T.S. before they begin emerging - however, while they are emerging they are helpless while climbing into the room and can be freely attacked if one is quick. Often they will not detect the player character until they finish emerging. They inflict radiation damage as well as physical damage.

Notes

  • Feral ghouls are not hostile towards house cats.
  • Feral ghouls' limbs are severed when broken, unlike other creatures. A feral ghoul that has been affected by a weapon with the Kneecapper effect may have their leg crippled instead of outright destroyed, allowing it to continue to limp after its enemies.
  • Feral ghouls will randomly become friendly if one has the Ghoulish perk.
  • The Children of Atom believe that feral ghouls were originally ghouls but rejected Atom and became feral.[8]
  • The only way to prevent a ghoul from being reanimated by a glowing one is by destroying its head or destroying its torso (using the Bloody Mess perk).
  • Ferals can sometimes do a finishing kill on both the player character (in third person mode) and NPCs by jumping on top of its victim and biting their neck.
  • The player may come across a group of named feral ghouls while roaming the Commonwealth. These ghouls were once the Sole Survivor's pre-War neighbors.

Appearances

Feral Ghouls appear in Fallout 4 and its add-ons Far Harbor, Vault-Tec Workshop and Nuka-World.

  1. Lone Wanderer: "What the hell's a Ghoul anyway? Some kind of diseased human?"
Gustavo: "You serious? You don't know what a Ghoul is? A goddamn disaster waiting to happen that's what they are. Sure, maybe you can get over the fact they look like someone took a cheese grater to their face. But it's what you don't see that's the problem. The radiation slowly eats away their brain, then they go zombie on you. It's better for everyone to kill them before all that, if you ask me."
