The Man from Deadhorse was a pre-War motion picture by California Crest Studios.
Background[]
The Man from Deadhorse was a Western starring Cooper Howard. Rewritten before the conclusion of the filming, after its scriptwriter was fired for alleged communist ties, it was completed to reflect a "New America" that would come after the defeat of communism.[2]
The film topped the box office shortly after its release around January 2077.[1] Because of this, California Crest Studios quickly began work on a sequel to the film.[3]
Content[]
Running at 102 minutes, the black and white[4] film starred Cooper Howard as a sheriff, and another actor, Jorge, as a villain named Joey Toro,[5] with a climactic scene featuring Cooper's character shooting Joey to death (despite Joey begging for mercy) after the following monologue:[4]
Cooper initially disliked this scene, complaining to the director Emil Dale that he felt he should spare Joey and arrest the character "as he usually does;" however, he was told by Emil that the new direction was needed to show that even a good person could be driven too far, and also to show a more public anti-communist stance, as the movie's writer, Cadillac Bob, had recently been fired due to what the studio deemed communist ties.[2]
Cooper eventually relented and acted the scene as demanded by the studio, killing Joey instead of arresting him, and delivering an anachronistic line after making the shot:[4]
The movie's box office success made it extremely popular. One Vault-Tec junior executive, in particular, loved the eulogy line and later quoted it to Cooper Howard, much to Cooper's dismay.[6] One surviving tape of the film was found by the Ghoul (Cooper Howard's post-War persona) in a Super Duper Mart in 2296.[7]
The Ghoul would later quote back at the same junior executive some odd 200 years later in a confrontation asking about the whereabouts of his family.[8]
