Materia, how soon is too soon?

I have played a few characters and brought one of these almost up to level 60 so far. I have still never affixed materia to my gear. I'm curious what is everyone's opinion about when you should start using materia.

Grade 4 are easily to get, you can use it if you want.
In my server the price also cheap.

Hello fellow faerian!
at lower lvl's you change gear so quickly that its usually not worth it to meld.
At higher lvl's it can help boost your stats a tiny bit. At endgame they have now put materia slots on the tome and raid gear, so you can pop some materia in there to help boost your most wanted stats a bit.

While leveling it is not super important. Tanks may want some extra stats but still not of required. Imo worry about it during latest gear tops such as 250-60-70 right now.

I'm a pretty lazy melder. I will only meld if I think I'm gonna be in that set for quite a while. Actually, that reminds me, I gotta meld whm.

250-260 gear meld tier 4s, 270 BiS gear meld tier 5s.

I started melding my DRK gear at level 34

at least with HQ gear it can last 10 lvls if you really want it to.
Before HW dropped, i pre-crafted and melded 2 full sets of tank gear in anticipation for DRK.
But i had and still have more grade 1, 2 and 3 materia then i'll ever need to use
