https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:April_2011_events_in_LIbya I am sure my tagging has similar issues many times, but not sure if anybody bothers - the capital I in Libya doesnt bother me, but there are some who would get upset. Keep up the good work! JarrahTree 10:45, 24 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Yes i have put it up for deletion - my mistake) Hugo999 (talk) 10:49, 24 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hahahah - some admin will have apoplexy on that one - a mix of G8 and G7, and they could very easily spend inordinate time over things like that, in the time it takes for us to tag 10 articles... JarrahTree 10:59, 24 June 2024 (UTC) slap of very smelly dead fish due my way, removed without any fuss... JarrahTree 11:32, 24 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Category sorting[edit]

Hello. I've tried to ping you a few times in edit summaries, but perhaps you aren't seeing it for some reason. When you change categories from a continental one to a national one (like this) could you also change the category sorting key; when in a continental one, articles should generally be sorted by the country name, but when they are in a national one, the topic should be the sort key. Leaving the sort key as the country isn't helpful as all things in that category will be related to the country. Cheers, Number 57 21:48, 24 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hello again. I've noticed you are still doing this. Do you not think it's an issue? Number 57 22:24, 25 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Avoid using memoirs as citations[edit]

Please avoid using the subject's own memoirs as citations, as you've done on Sam Neill: [1], [2]. If something is encyclopedically noteworthy, please find a reliable source that is independent of the subject to cite it with. Thank you! Softlavender (talk) 07:42, 13 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

  • Re my additions to the article on Sam Neill and the policy on living persons,, the Policy page on “Biographies of Living People” says that material challenged or likely to be challenge shall be supported by neutral sources; but it does not say that quoting from memoirs is forbidden! Re Sam Neill his memoir would enable me to add that he attended Cashmere and Medbury (primary) schools (4 years?) before attending Christs’ College (secondary school), and also why he transferred from Chritchurch to Wellington to complete his BA ! I suppose that I better not say that he did not enjoy his time at Medbury in case it was challenged, although reporting a personal reaction could be regarded as a fact not an opinion. I had regarded as Neill’s comments on the two roles when he played Irishmen as of interest as he was born in Northern Ireland , though may omit them.
  • Re quoting from memoirs of dead people the WWII diary of Alanbrooke edited and published posthumously in 2001 is regarded as more reliable in recording his frustrations in dealing with Churchill as CIGS of the British armed forces than the extracts published in the 1950s in two books by historian Arthur Bryant; The Turn of the Tide and Triumph in the West. This is because in the 1950s Churchill and others were still alive and might sue. This happened with a biography of Stanley Baldwin (see article on him) by G. M. Young when the publisher had to replace at great expense a section of seven leaves after threats to sue by Churchill and Lord Beaverbrooke. ````
Hi Hugo999, it's standard Wikipedia guideline that information. particularly citations, should be from reliable sources that are independent of the subject. Please try to find independent sources for any items such as schools attended, etc. They are usually very easy to find; if you need help researching, just inquire on the talkpage of the article and others can assist. Wikipedia is not a place for trivia, such as whether someone enjoyed their time somewhere, or what kind of food or characters they enjoy, and so on -- those are the kinds of things suitable and interesting in a memoir, but are trivia when it comes to an encyclopedia because they are not encyclopedically noteworthy. In any case, even a published interview is more reliable than a memoir for details of major life events, because the most reliable and reputable media sources have a good reputation for fact-checking, whereas anyone can say anything in a memoir.
