interface is pleased to announce the release of the latest publication from our Cybersecurity Policy and Resilience team lead by Dr. Sven Herpig, focusing on active cyber defense operations. This area has garnered significant attention from governments worldwide, both in policy and practice, in recent years. Building on our 2023 analysis, "Active Cyber Defense: Toward Operational Norms," we are now excited to present four case studies. These cases have been mapped against the criteria and safeguard framework we developed in our 2021 study, "Active Cyber Defense Operations: Assessment and Safeguards." Utilizing publicly available information, we provide quick overviews of these operations in our four cheat sheets on: The Hafnium-Web-Shell-Removal Operation LADYBIRD Operation MEDUSA The Hive Takedown Read the entire publication here: https://lnkd.in/dFQQRp-V It includes the underlying definition of active cyber defense operations as well as a quick recap of our assessment-and-safeguard-framework. We hope this publication will contribute to a nuanced debate around intrusive active cyber defense measures. Your feedback is highly valued as we plan to expand this service, both in the depth of our analysis and the number of case studies included.

On June 26th at 3PM pm CEST, Byron Tau joined interface’s Thorsten Wetzling to discuss private-public co-production of surveillance. More specifically, the talk centered on the question how intelligence services, the military and law enforcement bodies gain access to enormous amounts of bulk data by buying datasets from data brokers and internet firms. This growing albeit understudied and scarcely regulated method of state surveillance is a profound challenge to both civil liberties and national security. What is known about the scale and specific cases of cooperation between commercial data brokers and intelligence agencies? We are delighted that Byron Tau, a former investigative reporter for the Wall Street Journal and author of the new book Means of Control: How the Hidden Alliance of Tech and Government Is Creating a New American Surveillance State joined interface's Thorsten Wetzling to explore the subject further. The recording and the transcript for this event are now available: https://lnkd.in/e8jUYp2h

Eine der Takeaways der Studie: "The transition will take time.". Also legen wir los! #greenict

And our expertise has been increasingly sought by policymakers beyond Germany. Our new name aims to better reflect our European approach to tech policy.

We just published the recording of last week's event with Byron Tau on private-public co-production of surveillance here: https://lnkd.in/dHjCvheJ I hope it is of service to those interested in the complex topic of government access to data. Many thanks, Byron, for taking the time and for providing great illustrations during the session. I'm grateful to our audience for the many excellent questions we received. I'd also like to express my gratitude to Justus Römeth and Corbinian Ruckerbauer for your important help prior, during and after the meeting. Note to self: Learn how to stand still when you do these things.
