Star Wars: Edge of the Empire is the first roleplaying game in the Star Wars Roleplaying series, a series of cross-compatible roleplaying games published by Fantasy Flight Games under their license to create Star Wars–themed games.[4] A Beta version of the game was released at GenCon in August 2012, and it was announced that Sterling Hershey was one of the designers of the Beta test. Hershey revealed on his blog the names of two sequels, Age of Rebellion in 2014 and Force and Destiny in 2015.[2]

A Beginner Game boxed set was released on December 17, 2012,[3][5] with the more in-depth Core Rulebook released on July 5, 2013.[6]

On June 6, 2013, Hershey announced on his website the completion and upcoming release of the game's first full-length adventure, Beyond the Rim, scheduled for release in the 3rd Quarter of 2013.[7]
