This Doom 2 mod turns the iconic FPS into a high-octane roguelike

Break the "endless cycle of death and rebirth."

Classic Doom (both the first and second entries) will never die. Even co-creator John Romero still plays them. Much of this longevity can be attested to the modding community, and there’s one that will definitely appeal to you roguelike fans.

Recently, a trailer for Doom Infinite was uploaded to YouTube. The footage, complete with a metal-ized version of E1M1, shows what you can expect in this mod by difficultoldstuff.

Featuring an “endless cycle of death and rebirth,” you’re asked with plunging into a “twisted spiral of never-ending death and bloodlust.” Not only does it have roguelike elements, it also implements new powerups, weapons mods, and possibly more.

As if Doom wasn’t fast-paced already

More details about Doom Infinite can be found over on ModDB. It’s not fully out yet, but you can download the demo/early access version for now. The trailer alone really sells the insane action and violence, and the OG game is already pretty insane and violent. Just a note to say that it’s for GZDoom specifically, so you’ll need to make sure you have that installed.

After nearly 30 years, it’s hard to imagine that Doom is still very much in the gaming limelight. Mods are constantly being made for both the first and second installments of the legendary series.

Basically, when it comes to Doom Infinite, if you like classic shooters mixed with Binding of Isaac-style roguelike elements, then this one should be right up your alley. And if it’s not, well, there’s three decades’ worth of custom mods to sift through.
