As one of the most popular survival horror franchises in gaming history, it’s not hard to imagine that Resident Evil typically sells quite well. Still, it’s impressive to learn that the eighth installment – Village – has now surpassed 10 million units since coming out just over three years ago.
A recent release from Capcom says that not only has RE8 hit this milestone, it’s also the fastest to achieve this across the whole Resident Evil series. This also means that, as of March 31, 2024, the entire franchise has sold more than 157 million copies worldwide. That’s since it all began way back in 1996.
Selling 10 million units is impressive by anyone’s standards, and it shows that the most lucrative horror brand in all of gaming is still going strong after almost 30 years.
Mobile ports are likely the reason
The release from Capcom goes on to say that not only has the Gold Edition of Village been partly responsible for the recent increase in sales, but the iPhone and iPad ports released last October have also likely played a part.
Speaking of which, the developer also announced that Resident Evil 7: Biohazard will be coming to Apple products as of July 2. The post from X embedded above says that RE7 will be available on iPhone 15 Pro, plus all iPads and Macs that sport the M1 chip.
If that wasn’t enough, Resident Evil 2 is also coming to Apple at some point. No release date for that port yet, but it’s currently “in development.” Also, we can assume Capcom is referring to the remake rather than the original that came out in 1998. You know what, either would be grand.
