Tomb Raider has been around for just over 20 years and despite all our great memories of the original trilogy, they haven’t exactly held up visually. However, a small group of independent developers has taken on the task of remastering a classic Tomb Raider title.

Chief developer Nicobass has been leading a small development team in remastering Tomb Raider II for several years. Check out the video below to see the game’s Great Wall of China level redone in Unreal Engine 4.

The amount of work put into this is pretty mind-blowing. Some of the lighting effects in that cave sequence look particularly beautiful. After a few minutes of watching it’s clear that underneath that new coat of paint is the original Tomb Raider II gameplay, clunky controls and all.

You can even play a demo for the project, titled Tomb Raider: The Dagger of Xian right now. Those worried about the team be slapped with a cease and desist, don’t worry too much. PC Gamer actually reported that Crystal Dynamics, the company that holds the Tomb Raider license, is cool with this demo. Which is fortunate for the devs who slaved over it for years.
