There’s some zombies and skeletons, but that’s about the worst of it
A new Minecraft game is out right now, bringing some strategy and warfare to the blocky building world. You might be here to find out, though, if Minecraft Legends is suitable for kids, even with all the battling.
The short answer is that yes, you should be fine letting kids play Minecraft Legends. Minecraft is marketed towards all age groups, and Mojang does a good job of ensuring that it can appeal to the whole family. There’s some light fantasy fighting, but it’s definitely crafted in a manner that’s absolutely safe for kids to play. If you need more of a breakdown, though, we’ve got that.
Minecraft Legends ESRB rating
The Entertainment Software Rating Board, or ESRB, rating for Minecraft Legends is Everyone 10+. Also known as E10+, this is an in-between step from the “E for Everyone” and “T for Teen” ratings. Essentially a PG, as compared to G or PG-13 in movie ratings.
The E10+ rating only cites one factor for the rating, “Fantasy Violence.” It also notes that “Users Interact,” meaning there is multiplayer, and “In-Game Purchases,” indicating there are items sold for real money in-game.
In our own experience playing Minecraft Legends, there is fantasy fighting, but much tamer than you’d see in even superhero flicks. Skeleton archers shoot arrows and golems punch things, but it’s often comical bumps on the noggin. When units fall in battle, they just do a little “ugh” and then poof into thin air. It’s cartoon violence.
If you need a comparison point for this rating, look no further than Super Mario Odyssey, another family friendly title that garnered an E10+ rating. It also had fantasy violence, mostly in the form of Mario bouncing on a Koopa’s head.
It’s every parent’s own decision, but Minecraft Legends is—in our experience—a pretty kid-friendly game. It’s Helm’s Deep by way of Looney Tunes, so you’ll not run into anything too excessive here.
