You’ll need to know how to get Gun-Butt kills if you want to unlock the Sledgehammer melee weapon that was added in MW3 Season 4 Reloaded, as it features in the two challenges mentioned above. This may sound complicated, but thankfully it isn’t and is a relatively easy challenge to do as long as you can get close to your enemies.

What are Gun-Butt kills in MW3?

Gun-Butt kills are melee kills where you smack your opponent with the butt of your gun. Often, you will see players using them when they have ran out of bullets and are desperately trying to finish off an enemy.

The player will take the gun, and swing it at an opponent’s head, bashing them until the elimination is complete.

How to get Gun-Butt kills in MW3

To get Gun-Butt kills in MW3, you simply need to press your melee button when close to an opponent. This will be V on your keyboard or R3 on an Xbox or PlayStation controller but could be different if you’ve switched your controller settings.

Why is my character knifing instead of hitting a Gun-Butt kill?

If you have Throwing Knives equipped as your Lethal in MW3, your character will use one of them as the melee weapon instead of the butt of your gun. Make sure to take them off your class if you’re trying to get these kills.
