The Failed Execution of Ganondorf is an event in The Legend of Zelda series.[1]
Overview[]
The Failed Execution of Ganondorf took place several years following the Child Timeline ending of Ocarina of Time and the events of Majora's Mask, in which the King of Evil, Ganondorf, was captured and put on trial for his crimes against the Royal Family of Hyrule before being sentenced to capital punishment. The results of this execution would make way for Zant's Invasion of Hyrule. The story of the execution is told to Link and Midna by the Sages in Twilight Princess.
A Great Hero's Warning[]

After being sent back to his childhood at the conclusion of Ocarina of Time, the young Hero of Time, with the memory of his adventure still intact and remains the bearer of the Triforce of Courage, returned to Hyrule Castle to warn Princess Zelda about Ganondorf's conspiracy, to prevent the previous event from ever unfolding again, whom he knew was about to launch an assault against Hyrule in order to find the Sacred Realm and steal the Triforce if the Gerudo king was not stopped at once.[2][3] Because the castle have been alerted by Link about Ganondorf's betrayal to the King of Hyrule's alliance, the Royal Family were able to thwart the villain's plot before it came to fruition. After the failure of his attempted invasion due to his plans being prematurely revealed, Ganondorf was arrested and taken prisoner.[4] Because it was believed he would only continue to do more evil should he be let free, he was then sentenced to death at the Arbiter's Grounds.[2]
Execution of the King of Evil[]

Several years following the events of the Hero of Time's adventures in Hyrule and Termina and leading up to Twilight Princess, Ganondorf's execution sentence was to be carried out. The ancient Sages chained him in the Mirror Chamber and produced a sword of pure light, brandished by the Sage of Water, which was then used to impale the King of Evil, creating a glowing wound in his chest.

At this moment, Ganondorf was at the verge of death. However, the symbol of the Triforce of Power suddenly appeared on the back of his hand, preventing him from dying.[5] His strength restored, Ganondorf managed to break free of his bonds. The Sages were shocked to see the Triforce symbol resonating on his hand, not understanding how he could have attained the power of the gods.[5] Ganondorf promptly rushed forward, obliterating the Sage of Water. He then removed the Sword of the Sages from his chest and began to wield it as his own weapon.
Shocked by their capital punishment for Ganondorf being botched, the Sages activated the Mirror of Twilight, which proceeded to pull the Gerudo king into the Twilight Realm. Though this would not kill Ganondorf, it would imprison him and prevent him from invading Hyrule again for a time, therefore sealing him. Ganondorf's spirit would then roam the Twilight Realm, searching for a way to return to the world of light and conquer it. He revitalized himself using the lingering anguish and hatred from among the Twili that managed to bleed through the Twilight Realm's dimensional fabric.[6]
Trivia[]
- The music that plays when Ganondorf breaks free from his bounds, is a remix of Ocarina of Time's escape from Ganon's Castle.
- Despite the events of the execution taking place only a few years after the events of Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask, Ganondorf appears significantly older than in the N64 games, due to the story being told in Twilight Princess.
- A likely reason why the six Sages from Ocarina of Time never performed Ganondorf's execution is because the ones who are the Hero of Time's childhood friends were never awakened and the original Sages before them were still active and continued to the events of Twilight Princess.
