But as a game?
If you are a fan of the character aspect of the Cold Steel or Sky series, you will find this game basic and generic.
Cold Steel 1 did a fantastic job of making you care about the characters before throwing you into the bigger story.
Cold Steel 2 expanded on the war without sacrificing what made the characters compelling.
Cold Steel 3 and 4 basically focused way too much on the war and not enough on characters, with the exception of three of them.
Reverie was one of the worst experiences overall.
Daybreak freshens up the gameplay and goes a new direction with the story, but characters matter way less, and critically, the game eschews the common narrative that girls are eventually going to get attracted to the men they spend time with and treats everyone like a generic warrior. In one case, the game doesn't even bother with a declaration of gender.
This isn't to say it completely lacks fanservice; clearly, whoever developed the art was a fan of big chests on every female with one exception. But this is absolutely not Alisa/Rean. Go in expecting a generic experience like Tales of Arise, and chances are you'll really like this game.
I have mixed feelings about combat. There's options for direct action oriented combat reminiscent of previous Falcom games like Ys and Tokyo Xanadu, and turn-based combat that's kind of a cross between previous games and Arc the Lad Twighlight of Spirits in how you can move freely within your area to set up where you'll attack from. It's entirely optional, and the game does a good job of explaining this option with the use of in-game technology. But at times it almost simplifies combat too much. There's no real need to strategize where your attack will leave you on the field, because you can move yourself to where it won't matter. It's still fun. And it feels more streamlined, but it does come at the cost of some of the strategies previous games offered. And the action choice helps clear out lower leveled enemies quickly while not being boring.
All-in-all, I really enjoyed my time with this. It just might be my new favorite game in the series. Especially after Reverie was kind of a snoozer by comparison. But I think I had just gotten burned out on that cast and story arc after hundreds of hours with them. And Reverie didn't offer anything we hadn't already experienced previously. Daybreak does a great job of offering enough familiarity to appease fans, while doing enough things different to keep us invested. I'm definitely excited for the sequel to make it out West finally next year!
