Nature notes
The fully grown male grey seal was playing in the River Tyne at Jarrow. These days this isn’t a rare sight. With more than 4,000 seals breeding on the Farne Islands, and smaller natal colonies at Northumbria’s Coquet Island and Berwickshire’s Fast Castle Head, pinniped visitors frequently come up the Tyne, following the salty tide. The seals swim upstream searching for cod, or in the hope of securing the delicacy of a salmon. Tracking shows that grey seals are great travellers. When hunting, they can swim several hundred kilometres offshore. Able to dive up to 100m, they forage along the sea bed looking for fish, squid, crustaceans and octopuses. In contrast to such depths, even the mighty Tyne must seem small and shallow. Jonathan Tulloch
