Did you know that you can purchase a domain that already has an excellent backlink profile?

So instead of starting from scratch, you can grab a domain within your niche that’s already accumulated all those backlinks.

This way you can save yourself time and money…and slingshot past the competition!

When it comes to finding expired domains, you need to check and see if there’s anything suspicious or spammy. Then you need to check the domain’s metrics.

All this checking can be quite overwhelming…if you don’t have the right tools.

This is where SpamZilla comes in.

SpamZilla is one of my favourite tools to find expired domains with great backlink profiles.

They pull in thousands of domains every day, with metrics from sites like Majestic and Ahrefs. Best of all, background checking is automated.

In this Spamzilla review, I will quickly go through the different domains which I have purchased with SpamZilla and their top features.

What Is SpamZilla?

SpamZilla helps you find high-quality expired domains at great prices.

SpamZilla is one of the only domain databases on the market that contains backlink data you can use to find domains that are packed with SEO value.

This is vital when it comes to filtering out misused and abused domains.

What Are Expired Domains & How Do I Use Them?

An expired domain is a domain that hasn’t been renewed by the owner making it available for re registration. These domains can carry SEO value saving you time and money.

You can take advantage of expired domains in 3 different ways:

  • Building Authority or Niche Sites: If you build a content-rich site on a powerful expired domain, it may even be enough to crack the first page rankings on Google without any work.
  • Building a Private Blog Network: Did you know that you can use expired domains to make many high-quality, authoritative sites? Then you can use those sites to rank your website! That’s how I did it to 14x search traffic for this site.
  • 301 Redirects: You can also take the expired domain 301 redirect it to your main site. This will pass over a large chunk of the link juice and authority from the expired domain to your site immediately. (Though I don’t recommend you do too many of these!)

How Much Does SpamZilla Cost?

SpamZilla offers two options.

They have a free version, which allows you to review 25 domains. But, you do not get to access the full feature set.

The paid version costs $37 per month and grants you full access to all their features. Including up to 1850 domains a month.

Pricing

Domains I Bought With SpamZilla

I’ve purchased a few domains with SpamZilla because I knew that I wouldn’t be able to create these kinds of backlink profiles with the same budget.

Let me give you a few examples.

Domain 1: $9

I purchased a domain in the ecommerce sector that had great backlinks.

domain in the ecommerce sector

The expired website above had 236 backlinks with key authority sites like a global crowdfunding platform and even a popular social networking site.

Domain 2: $340

I bought a second expired domain in the technology niche at a steeper cost.

But this was what I got.

domain in the ecommerce sector

For this site, there were links from 209 different domains.

As you can see in the image, there were some pretty solid backlinks. From major government organizations, popular SaaS companies to popular forums and directories.

Domain 3: $220

I even purchased an expired domain within the garden niche. That’s how niche and focused you can get with Spamzillas searches.

domain within the garden niche

There were 67 backlinks.

As you can see, the top backlinks were from:

  • The European Union
  • An International social media platform for creative works
  • A Popular SaaS tool for email marketing
  • The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change

I initially set the site on this domain up on July 2nd.

Here’s what it looks like in October this year.

organic keywords

It has 576 organic keywords, with 24 words ranking in the top #1-3 position. It even won its first featured snippet in 46 days on August 17th.

And it’s still growing today!

What Do I Get For My Money?

Below, we’ll go through Spamzilla’s primary features. I’ll also show you how you can find great domains in your niche and which metrics you should look out for.

Easy to User Interface

When you sign in to SpamZilla, you’ll see something like this.

User Interface

This is the primary dashboard.

While it does look like an intense database, it’s simple when you break it down.

At the top, you can see a search bar that says ‘Enter keyword’. You can enter any keywords relevant to your niche.

intense database

Next to the search bar, there’s a ‘plus’ button.

plus button

If you click on the button, it will say ‘Send domains to Watch List or Spam Checker’. Here, you can enter domains you’d like Spamzilla to check and process.

Send domains to Watch List

Then, we move onto the domain lists.

domain lists

If you click on this button, it will show you the list of domains you recently added. If you click on any name, it will load the list inside Spamzilla.

And finally, we have filters.

filters

If you click on ‘Filters’, you can see a dropdown of all the filters on Spamzilla.

filters on Spamzilla

Here, the filters are broken down into different sections.

On the left-hand side, you can access:

  • Tools
  • My Domains
  • Export
  • Settings
  • Profile

  • Credits
  • Tour
  • Videos
  • Help
  • Logout

different sections

Let’s move onto the domain database.

If I wanted to find an expired domain concerning pianos, and I typed in ‘piano’…

This is what I’d see:

expired domain

On the top right-hand corner, there are 859 domains.

Under ‘Domain’, you have the domain names.

Then you have the source. If you hover your mouse over the icon, it will tell you what the source of the expired domain is.

the expired domain

The next 6 columns are Majestic data columns. Here SpamZilla pulls data from Majestic (SEO Backlink Checker and Link Prospecting Tool) and their popular metrics.

Link Prospecting Tool

Then we have a group of Moz metrics.

Moz metrics

And then, the SpamZilla Score.

SpamZilla Score

It’s a score that SpamZilla’s proprietary spam checking algorithm generates. It ranges from 1-100, with 1 representing a low level of spam.

If you click on the ‘SZ Score’, you can gain further data specific to that domain.

SZ Score

You can also access further metrics from:

  • SpamZilla
  • Google Index
  • SEMRush Metrics
  • Alexa Rank

further metrics

You also know when the date added was and the domain’s price. You also get to see when the domain actually expires.

We’ll go through all these metrics in more detail below.

Search by keyword

Let me show you how to find an expired domain within your niche. For example, If you want to build content around online gaming reviews.

You can type in the word ‘gaming’.

type in the word

You can see that there are a lot of different options for keyword gaming (2,297 to be exact!) If these are a bit too broad, you can begin by adding more keywords.

Let’s try ‘online gaming’.

Alternatively, you can try ‘online games’.

If you’re not sure how to start, you can go for a specific keyword and then branch out to longer keywords related to your niche.

Critical Metrics

Critical Metrics

The first 6 columns are Majestic metrics:

  • TF: (Trust Flow) It’s a useful metric to assess the trustworthiness of a website. The higher the number, the better.
  • CF: (Citation Flow) The higher the CF, the more links the site has. It’s ideal if the TF and CF are in a similar ratio. If the CF is higher than the TF, there’s a good chance the site is spammy.
  • Maj BL: (Majestic’s Back Links) The more backlinks a domain has, the better. If there are too many backlinks, it can also mean spam.
  • Maj RD: (Majestic’s Referring Domains) The higher the RD, the better. But too high can also mean spam.
  • Maj Topics: (Majestic Topics) Great way to see which niches the domains fall under.
  • Site Lag: (Site language) Language the site and backlinks are in.

The next 2 columns are Moz metrics:

  • Moz DA: (Moz’s Domain Authority) Popular metric to determine how well a website will rank on the SERPs.
  • Moz PA: (Moz’s Page Authority) Metric that predicts how well a specific page will rank on the SERPs.

Then we have 3 SpamZilla Metrics.

  • SZ Score: (SpamZilla Score) The score measures how clean each domain is.
  • SZ Parked: (SpamZilla Parked.) The number of domain parking pages found in the domain history.
  • SZ Drops: (SpamZilla Drops) The number of domain drops recorded for the domain.

If you’re having difficulty understanding any of these metrics, hover over the name. You’ll get a short description of what they are.

short description

And if you’re just starting out, make sure you focus on:

  • Majestic’s TF, CF and TF/CF Ratio
  • Moz’s DA and PA
  • SZ Score
  • Domain History (click on the SZ Score to look into the site’s previous activity or click here to check your domain ownership history & historic domain authority)
  • Backlink Profile (you can activate Ahrefs metrics on Spamzilla – If you want a more in-depth look into the expired domain’s complete backlink profile, you might need to subscribe to Ahrefs)
  • Organic Traffic (you can check via Google Analytics)

Automatic Spam Checking

SpamZilla does an outstanding job of automatically filtering out spammy domains.

But spam checking cannot be 100% automated because there are too many variables from each website.

So if you want to look into the site’s SZ Score in a bit more detail, you can click on the score. This will show you what the website looked like in the past.

the website

Here, you can view domain snapshots.

You can also access the source of the top 100 backlinks from each domain.

100 backlinks

If you see red text under ‘Spam message’, there is a link which you can click ‘Show More’ to see the full details.

Spam Message

But if there are other messages like too many parked pages in the history of a domain, it’s a good sign to undergo a more in-depth inspection before making any purchases.
