Critics Consensus

Some tricky genre juggling makes The Rental a bit of a fixer-upper, but effective chills and a solid cast make this a fine destination for horror fans.

Wenlei Ma News.com.au Delivering solid thrills and an ugly portrait of disintegrating relationships, The Rental is a clever meld of drama and horror. Rated: 3/5 Feb 28, 2021 Full Review Tim Robey Daily Telegraph (UK) Billed as an indie slasher, it works even better as a wickedly unsympathetic chamber piece. Rated: 4/5 Jan 21, 2021 Full Review Peter Bradshaw Guardian It's pretty basic boilerplate, scary-movie stuff, with tropes and tricks that have already been extensively satirised elsewhere. Rated: 2/5 Jan 20, 2021 Full Review Brandon Stanwyck InSession Film If Dave Franco is indeed determined to keep directing—and if each picture manages to be slightly better than the last—then by his fifth or sixth film he’ll surely churn out something noteworthy... Rated: C- Jul 17, 2024 Full Review William Stottor Loud and Clear Reviews Restrained and patient, The Rental has glimmers of potential without ever becoming the memorable, intelligent horror it seems to want to be. Rated: 3/5 Jul 11, 2024 Full Review Yasmine Kandil Discussing Film Dave Franco’s directorial debut is strong and offers a promising future. As an actor himself, he is able to direct in a way that elevates the performances as very naturalistic. Rated: 3/5 Jul 9, 2024 Full Review Read all reviews

Chester M It's a 3 star, but reading some of other reviews that went crazy made me bump it half a star to somehow balance it out lol Film is not bad, not exceptional, just meh, might put some people to sleep, does some things right, good acting, etc It's the very definition of 3 stars Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 07/09/24 Full Review Tim M Featuring a well-paced progression of character tensions and suspense, The Rental is a prime thriller for the modern day and a solid directorial debut for Dave Franco. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 07/02/24 Full Review Robert G Some of it feels familiar, but there is enough depth and atmosphere to make it different. I like that you're left with a lot of questions, and don't really know what's going on. I think the main issue dragging it down is that you're not rooting for anyone. Each character ranges from obnoxious to full on scummy. If there is a sequel, a bit of pathos, for someone, would go a long way. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 03/30/24 Full Review Andrew M It's a mix of drama and horror. The build-up of suspense during the first hour pulled me in, but the ending really lets the air out of the balloon. The only way the ending makes sense is if Franco is trying to set up for a sequel. I did think the acting and cinematography were great. Worth it if you're bored and want a movie to watch, but that's about it. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 03/27/24 Full Review Antoine K The 4 main protagonists are so obnoxious and idiotic in this movie, does it even matter what happen to them? Not one of them seem to have a redeemable quality, representing the epitome of the pretentious and self-absorbed Bay Area mentality. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 01/28/24 Full Review Alexis J Plods along ok, gets weird later. Not a patch on cabin in the woods obvs. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 12/30/23 Full Review Read all reviews
