Jeffrey Parkin (he/him) has been writing video game guides for Polygon for almost seven years. He has learned to love just about every genre of game that exists.

You can respec your stats and attributes in Elden Ring with an item called Larval Tears. But you’ll have to find (and defeat) an NPC to before you can respec your character, and Larval Tears are a pretty rare item.

Our Elden Ring guide will tell you where to find Rennala, Queen of the Full Moon, and how to respec your stats and attributes with Larval Tears.

The first step of resetting your character’s stats is to play until you reach the Academy of Raya Lucaria. The Academy is in the center of the Liurnia of the Lakes region that you’ll explore after finishing Stormveil Castle.

Raya Lucaria’s boss, Rennala, Queen of the Full Moon, will drop a remembrance and a Great Rune, but doesn’t actually die when you defeat her. Instead, she becomes an NPC who hangs out there at the Raya Lucaria Library site of grace.

With the Great Rune of the Unborn in hand, return to Rennala and speak with her. Choose the Rebirth option from her menu. You’re required to use a Larval Tear to be reborn. Doing so means all of your stats are reset to the baseline of your class and you get to reassign them as you see fit. This is a great way to experiment with builds if you find a fun new weapon or a powerful incantation. You can do this as often as you like, so long as you have Larval Tears to spend.

Note that all stats have a soft cap, or rather, multiple soft caps, which is where levelling past a certain point makes stat gains less efficient. Our Elden Ring soft cap explainer can explain how this works, and the threshold for each stat.

If you need help finding those Larval Tears, we’ve got a guide for all Larval Tear locations.
